Fort Worth hosts Texas high school pitmasters in regional BBQ showdown

Fort Worth welcomed high school students from around the Lone Star State this weekend for a regional barbecue competition that highlighted both culinary talent and life‑skill development. The event, held at a local venue in the city, featured teams presenting their best entries in five classic Texas categories: chicken, ribs, brisket, beans and dessert.

Local flavor, statewide talent

Each participating school entered a team of pitmasters who spent weeks perfecting recipes that reflect Texas’ rich barbecue heritage. Judges—comprising local chefs, culinary teachers and seasoned pitmasters—evaluated the entries on flavor, technique, presentation and adherence to traditional cooking methods.

While the competition’s primary goal was to crown the top barbecue team, organizers emphasized that the experience offers students practical skills they can carry forward. “Cooking over a wood fire teaches patience, teamwork and responsibility,” said a faculty advisor from a participating high school. “These are lessons that translate to any career or personal endeavor.”

A celebration of community and tradition

The event also served as a gathering point for families, alumni and community members who gathered to support their local schools. Spectators sampled the entries throughout the day, turning the competition into a festive food‑fair atmosphere that celebrated Texas’ love of barbecue.

On Sunday, the competition concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing the top teams in each category as well as overall excellence. Winners received trophies, ribbons and the bragging rights that come with being named the best high‑school pitmasters in the region.

Building future leaders

Beyond the immediate excitement of the contest, the organizers view the competition as an investment in the next generation of skilled workers and entrepreneurs. By exposing students to the rigors of professional‑grade cooking and the business aspects of running a food operation, the event aligns with broader community goals of fostering self‑reliance and strong family values.

Local business leaders also took note, with several expressing interest in mentoring programs or apprenticeship opportunities for standout students. “We see these young chefs as future contributors to our local economy,” said a Fort Worth restaurateur who attended the event.

The regional barbecue competition will return next year, with plans to expand the number of participating schools and add new categories that reflect evolving culinary trends while staying true to Texas’ time‑honored barbecue traditions.
