Houston Airport System unveils six projects, new bookstore and eateries open in Lake Houston area

Houston Airport System officials revealed six major development projects slated for completion by 2027, reinforcing Mayor John Whitmire’s focus on better passenger experiences, stronger infrastructure, and expanded opportunities for local businesses.

Airport upgrades to boost the region

Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for the Houston Airport System, told the Greater Houston Partnership’s 2026 State of the Airports event that the initiatives will modernize terminals, improve baggage handling, expand parking, and add new gate facilities. “Houston doesn’t stand still, and neither can its airports,” Szczesniak said. “We’re investing in the passenger experience while creating more opportunities for Houston businesses to grow with us.”

2nd & Charles opens in Humble

Book lovers in Humble can look forward to a new 2nd & Charles location opening in early December. The store will buy, sell, and trade used books, video games, vinyl records, CDs, movies, comics, toys, and collectibles, plus a curated selection of new merchandise. “Customers can bring in items they would like to sell or trade and walk out with cash or store credit, so the store is always changing and there’s something new every visit,” said Scott Kappler, executive vice president of operations.

Cakery brings Mediterranean desserts to Kingwood

Owner Maral Veysalova announced a November 6 opening for Cakery’s new Kingwood shop. The bakery will feature handcrafted cakes, pastries, honey cake, milky bird, traditional baklava, and other Mediterranean‑inspired sweets. “We take pride in preparing our desserts with care and focusing on freshness, quality ingredients, and flavors that we would be proud to serve to our own family,” Veysalova said.

Brunch & Bloom opens in Atascocita

Veterans Kwan and Kia Johnson launched Brunch & Bloom in December 2025, aiming to fill a perceived gap in upscale dining for the Atascocita community. Kwan, a former regional operations manager who medically retired from the U.S. Army, and Kia, a nurse practitioner, have lived in the area for nearly two decades and wanted to give back to the families that raised their three children.

Eviction filings rise in Lake Houston area

A new study from the Kinder Institute for Urban Research’s 2026 State of Housing report shows a spike in eviction filings across northeast Harris County, including Humble, Atascocita, and Lake Houston. Local nonprofit Humble Area Assistance Ministries reports helping roughly 100 families daily with basic needs. “We are seeing higher evictions in certain areas around the Lake Houston area,” said executive director Millie Garrison.
