Lazaranda Mexican Kitchen Fills a Real Gap in Allen

The first thing that hits you when you sit down at Lazaranda is the smell of dried chiles roasting somewhere back in the kitchen — earthy, faintly smoky, nothing like the salted chip grease you get at a Tex-Mex chain. I noticed it on my first visit and it’s what made me come back a second time before I’d even finished paying my bill.

Lazaranda sits in a shopping center off Stacy Road, easy to miss if you’re not looking. The interior is brighter than you’d expect — white walls, wood accents, a few hanging lights, some plants — not trying to be a cantina, not trying to be upscale either. It lands somewhere around neighborhood restaurant done with intention. Tables fill up on weekends, and there’s usually a wait after 7 p.m. on Fridays, but it moves quickly enough.

The menu skews toward central and coastal Mexican rather than the standard Tex-Mex template. That means moles, slow-braised meats, ceviches, and salsas that don’t come out of a jar. I’ve ordered the lamb barbacoa tacos more times than I can count — the meat is tender and genuinely fatty in the right way, served on small corn tortillas with pickled onion and a salsa verde that has some actual heat to it. The cochinita pibil is similarly good: pulled pork with that orange-red achiote marinade, bright and a little tangy, nothing soft-pedaled.

If you’re with a group, the tableside guacamole is worth doing once. It’s not gimmicky — the server just makes it fresh to your preferred level of heat and lime. The difference between that and pre-made guac sitting in a lowboy somewhere is not subtle. Start there, order the birria queso fundido as a second share plate, and you’re already eating well before the entrees arrive.

Drinks lean heavily on the margarita side of the menu, and they’re not watered down. The classic is good; the spicy mango version is better than it has any right to be. If you want something lighter, the agua frescas change seasonally and are always worth asking about.

Prices are honest. Tacos run $4–$5 each, main plates somewhere between $14 and $22 depending on the protein. Margaritas are $10–$13. For the quality of what comes out of the kitchen, that’s not a lot to ask.

What makes Lazaranda stand out in Allen specifically is that most of the Mexican food nearby defaults to the same fajita-and-queso playbook. There’s nothing wrong with that playbook — I eat fajitas regularly — but Lazaranda is doing something with more range and more technique, and it’s doing it in a spot where nobody would expect it. Lunch is quieter and almost meditative; dinner has more energy. Either way, go hungry and don’t skip the salsas on the table, because whoever is making them back there knows what they’re doing.
