Prescott’s Pastries Earns Its Lines on a Cold Morning

What do you actually do with an hour before a Mayo appointment, or a slow Saturday when nothing else has opened yet? That question has a pretty good answer on the east side of downtown Rochester, in a small bakery on 2nd Street SW that doesn’t advertise much and doesn’t need to.

Prescott’s Pastries opens early — usually by 7 a.m. — and by 8 on a weekend the glass case up front has already started to thin out. That’s your first real piece of information about this place: if you want the full selection, go early. The croissants in particular go fast. They’re laminated properly, with visible layers and a bottom crust that actually crackles when you press it, which sounds obvious but is rarer than it should be in a mid-size Midwestern city.

The room itself is small. Maybe a dozen seats total, a couple of two-tops near the window and a narrow counter along one wall. The walls are painted a warm cream, and there’s usually soft music at a volume where you can still have a conversation. It doesn’t feel designed or curated — it just feels like someone thought about what they’d want in a bakery and built that.

The pastry case on a full morning runs to almond croissants, plain butter croissants, kouign-amann, seasonal fruit tarts, a rotating quiche, and sometimes a dense, slightly sweet morning bun dusted in orange sugar. Prices are reasonable for what you’re getting — most individual pastries fall in the $4 to $6 range, the quiche slice a little more. Coffee is house-drip or espresso drinks, made to order and not fussed over in a way that slows down the line. The oat milk latte I had on my last visit was straightforward and good, which is exactly what you want at 7:30 in the morning.

The staff is calm and efficient in a way that reads as genuinely professional. No performative warmth, no scripted enthusiasm. They know the menu, they move quickly, and they’ll tell you honestly if something’s sold out or if the quiche is better today than the tart. That matters more than it sounds.

It’s worth noting what Prescott’s is not: it’s not a full breakfast spot, there’s no eggs-and-bacon menu, and seating is limited enough that on a busy morning you might end up taking your bag to go. But if you’re in the right mindset — meaning you want a proper pastry and a good cup of coffee and somewhere quiet to sit for forty-five minutes — this is a very satisfying stop.

Parking on 2nd Street is usually manageable, especially before 9. There’s a small lot behind the building and metered street parking right out front that’s free before 8 a.m. on weekdays.

The honest pitch for Prescott’s is simple: it’s a bakery that takes its work seriously without making a production of it. Rochester has plenty of coffee shops, but a place that actually knows how to make a croissant is a different thing. Go on a weekday if you want more options. Go on a Saturday if you want the full experience of watching a neighborhood bakery do what it does on its busiest morning.
