Sen. Andy Kim Calls Caring for Father with Alzheimer’s ‘Hell’ and Pushes Medicare‑at‑Home Reform

New Jersey – U.S. Senator Andy Kim, a Democrat from the Garden State, opened up about the personal toll of caring for his father, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease about a year ago. In an interview with Eyewitness News, Kim said the experience has been “some of the hardest times in my life” and described his father’s condition as “hell” due to worsening psychosis, aggression and combativeness.

Kim explained that finding appropriate care has been a constant struggle. “We try to get in care, and the places that we try to apply for, we often get the message back: patient too complex,” he said. “That’s the reason why we need help. It’s because it’s complex. It’s difficult.” The senator said these challenges have sharpened his resolve to address gaps in the nation’s caregiving system, calling it “my life’s work now.”

Legislative proposals aimed at families

Kim is championing a bill he calls “Medicare at Home,” which would expand in‑home services for older adults who need additional care and support. The proposal seeks to give families more options to keep loved ones at home rather than forcing them into institutional settings that often lack the capacity to handle complex cases.

He is also promoting a separate initiative known as “MediKids,” which would automatically enroll every child in health coverage at birth. “Health care for every child,” Kim said, summarizing the goal in five words. The plan is intended to remove barriers to early medical care and reduce the administrative burden on families.

Concern over NIH funding cuts

During a recent visit to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus in Maryland, Kim voiced alarm about proposed cuts to medical‑research programs and staffing. “There have been efforts to try to cut the NIH,” he warned, noting that a “huge number of people” are leaving the agency and that funding shortfalls are “devastating and need to change.” Kim emphasized that research into Alzheimer’s and other diseases must be protected to advance prevention and treatment.

Alzheimer’s as a unifying issue

Kim stressed that Alzheimer’s disease does not discriminate by party affiliation. “Alzheimer’s doesn’t care if you’re a Democrat or Republican,” he said. “If ever there was an issue that can unite us, I think it is about care.” He added that his greatest personal worry is for his own children, hoping they will not have to endure the same caregiving hardships.

Kim’s personal story underscores a broader national conversation about how families cope with serious illness, the need for robust home‑care options, and the importance of safeguarding federal research funding. By tying his own experience to policy proposals, the senator hopes to rally bipartisan support for measures that would ease the burden on caregivers across the country.
