New York City – As New Yorkers for Children marks its 30th anniversary, the nonprofit is spotlighting a heart‑warming partnership with Macy’s flagship store in Midtown. Young adults ages 18 to 26 who are transitioning out of foster care received personal styling sessions to select suits, gowns and accessories for the gala scheduled for Monday, Nov. 9.
Styling sessions give confidence and purpose
Abraham Britt and Destiny Britt, two of the program’s participants, spent several hours with Macy’s personal stylist Paul Foy. “I feel really pretty, I feel like a Hollywood star,” Destiny said after trying on a dress. Foy noted that while styling can sometimes feel superficial, working with these young people “makes it all worth it” when he sees their faces light up.
Two‑decade partnership supports youth
Macy’s has donated attire for gala attendees for more than 20 years, reinforcing the retailer’s commitment to the community. The donations include suits for men, gowns for women and a range of accessories, ensuring that every participant can attend the event with dignity.
New Yorkers for Children’s mission
CEO Ellen Ampofo explained that the organization focuses on college admissions, career readiness, and financial and emotional well‑being for foster‑care alumni. “When you have trauma, it’s different compared to peers who grew up in a two‑parent home,” Ampofo said. “Most of these young people lack the resources and tools they need to become thriving adults, and that’s where we come in.”
Impact on the community
Each year the nonprofit serves more than 1,000 young people, offering mentorship, scholarships and life‑skills workshops. The gala not only celebrates three decades of service but also raises funds to expand those programs. By providing clothing and a supportive environment, the partnership with Macy’s helps participants feel valued and ready to step into adulthood.
Looking ahead
As the organization looks to the future, Ampofo emphasized that the goal remains unchanged: to equip foster‑care youth with the tools they need to succeed. The gala will feature speeches, live music and a silent auction, with proceeds directed toward expanding educational and career services.
