Madison residents have a new chance to spotlight everyday heroes in their neighborhoods. The American Red Cross announced that nominations are open for its “Wisconsin Heroes” program, which recognizes volunteers, military personnel and community members who have made a lasting difference.
How to nominate a hero
According to Executive Director Kyle Kriegl, the nomination process is straightforward. “The deadline is Nov. 20, so it’s going to be here really fast,” Kriegl said. “We’re asking folks to go ahead and make a nomination, you can go ahead to redcross.org/wisconsinheroes so it’s pretty easy. We’re not asking you to write a lot, just a few paragraphs on why you feel this individual, or group of people, is making a difference in our community.”
Five categories of recognition
The Red Cross will select winners in five distinct categories:
- Volunteer Hero – for those who give their time and skills to help others.
- Military Hero – honoring service members who exemplify dedication and sacrifice.
- Community Leader – individuals who lead local initiatives that improve quality of life.
- Youth Hero – young people who demonstrate outstanding civic spirit.
- Group Hero – teams or organizations that collectively make a positive impact.
Each category highlights a different way residents contribute to the common good, reinforcing Madison’s strong tradition of service and faith‑based outreach.
What happens after nominations close
After the Nov. 20 deadline, the Red Cross will review all submissions and select winners to be announced in the spring. The honored individuals and groups will receive public recognition and a special award ceremony, underscoring the importance of community service in building a resilient, family‑focused city.
Why the program matters
In a time when many families are looking for positive role models, the Red Cross’s initiative aligns with core community values: faith, family and individual liberty. By celebrating those who serve without expectation of reward, the program encourages others to follow suit, strengthening the social fabric that makes Madison a thriving place to raise children and practice shared values.
Get involved
Anyone can submit a nomination, whether you are a neighbor, a church member, or a fellow volunteer. The Red Cross encourages Madison’s faith‑based groups, schools and civic organizations to spread the word and help identify deserving candidates.
