New Sienna Donor Center Enhances Blood Supply for Local Hospitals

Gulf Coast Blood has opened a new donor center in Sienna, located at 9010 Sienna Crossing Dr., Ste. 300, to better serve the community’s blood donation needs. The facility, which began operations on May 29, plays a crucial role in supporting approximately 170 hospitals and medical facilities across the region by meeting the daily requirement of around 1,000 blood donations.

Kevin Shipley, Vice President of Donor & Community Engagement at Gulf Coast Blood, emphasized the importance of Fort Bend County, one of Texas’s fastest-growing areas, in addressing future healthcare needs. “The opening of Gulf Coast Blood – Sienna expands access to convenient blood donation opportunities for residents, while helping strengthen the local blood supply for the patients and hospitals that rely on us every day,” Shipley stated.

Modern Amenities for Donors

The Sienna location is designed to provide a calming and welcoming experience for donors. The center features a modern, open-concept layout with large windows, natural light, calming music, aromatherapy, and a dedicated massage chair for relaxation after donations. A customizable beverage station is also available for donors to enhance their drinks with flavors, caffeine, or electrolytes.

Erik Gonzales, manager of Gulf Coast Blood – Sienna, highlighted the importance of creating a compassionate environment. His personal experience with his mother’s illness has shaped his approach to donor care. “Towards the end of my mother’s life, I started to see that what we do here really makes an impact; what our donors give really changes people’s lives,” Gonzales shared.

Encouraging First-Time Donors

Summer months pose challenges for blood banks due to the pause in school-based blood drives and regular donors being on vacation. The Sienna center is focused on welcoming first-time donors by addressing their anxieties. Staff members engage donors in conversation, provide snacks and water, and offer reclining donation beds to ensure a comfortable experience.

Donation Types and Eligibility

To donate blood, visitors must weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Donors as young as 16 can donate with parental consent, while those 17 and older do not require consent. Gonzales advises donors to arrive well-prepared by staying hydrated and eating a full meal beforehand to reduce the risk of feeling lightheaded.

There are different types of donations available: whole blood donations, which can be given every eight weeks and are used for trauma patients and surgeries, and platelet donations, which can be given every seven days and support cancer patients and burn victims.
