Dolly Parton estate manager drops lawsuit against former security chief

In a surprising development for Tennessee’s entertainment community, Danny Nozell, the manager of Dolly Parton’s estate and head of the She’s Alive organization, filed a motion Thursday to dismiss the lawsuit he had brought against former security chief Bryan Seaver.

Background of the dispute

Nozell had obtained a temporary restraining order in September against Seaver and his firm, Squadron Augmented Protection Services, after alleging that Seaver’s conduct threatened the estate’s employees and business partners. The order was intended to become a permanent injunction, effectively barring Seaver from any contact with She’s Alive personnel.

The filing cited Seaver’s “claimed access to weapons, experience with violence, and intention to retaliate,” as reasons for the court’s initial protection. According to the complaint, Seaver had threatened to “destroy the entire brand” and described himself as “literally an international arms dealer and mercenary.”

Withdrawal and settlement

On Thursday, a brief Tennessee court filing indicated that both parties had reached an agreement, though no details were disclosed. The motion seeks dismissal “without prejudice,” meaning the case could be re‑filed in the future. The filing did not explain why the parties chose to settle at this stage, just that a proposed order was being drafted for the judge’s approval.

She’s Alive had terminated Seaver and his company in early September and subsequently petitioned for the restraining order, arguing that Seaver’s “terrorizing conduct made their continued retention untenable.” The petition claimed that Seaver’s threats began shortly before Parton’s death and continued afterward, targeting She’s Alive’s personnel, counsel, and business partners.

Seaver’s response

In court documents, Seaver contended that the text messages Nozell presented as evidence were private conversations between two grieving friends discussing strategy. He denied ever threatening physical harm to Nozell, any She’s Alive employee, contractor, attorney, advisor, or business partner, stating, “I have never threatened physical harm… I have no intention of doing so.”

Seaver explained that the angry messages referenced a dispute with Herschend Family Entertainment, the operator of Parton’s Dollywood park and Songteller Hotel, over unpaid security services exceeding $250,000. He argued that the restraining order’s scope was overly broad, effectively restricting him from entering large portions of Nashville and even limiting contact with his own relatives.

Legal implications

The court’s temporary order requires Seaver and his firm to stay at least 1,000 feet (about 300 meters) away from any She’s Alive property, employees, or business partners. The withdrawal of the case leaves the temporary order in place but removes the push for a permanent injunction, at least for now.

Legal analysts note that the settlement may reflect a pragmatic decision by both sides to avoid a protracted courtroom battle that could further distract from the management of Parton’s extensive business empire, which includes music publishing, theme parks, and hospitality ventures centered in her hometown of Sevierville, Tennessee.

Impact on the Parton legacy

Dolly Parton, who passed away on August 25, 2026, left behind a multi‑million‑dollar empire that supports numerous employees, family members, and charitable initiatives. The resolution of this internal dispute helps preserve the stability of the estate’s operations and allows She’s Alive to focus on continuing Parton’s philanthropic work without the cloud of ongoing litigation.

The Associated Press was unable to obtain comment from the attorneys representing either side.
