Sulphur, Oklahoma – On Thursday, Sulphur Public Schools opened the doors of its $35 million, 70,000‑square‑foot facility to community members, students and local supporters. The new complex houses a 1,400‑seat arena, a 750‑seat performing‑arts center and a dedicated college‑and‑career center, providing modern spaces for athletics, the arts and post‑secondary preparation.
Bond‑Funded Investment in the Future
The construction was financed through the district’s 2022 bond, a voter‑approved measure that reflects the community’s commitment to education and youth development. Superintendent Matt Holder explained that the district wanted a facility that families could be proud of and that would serve generations of Sulphur students.
“We’re going to give them a place that they can be proud of,” Holder said. “I’m just so happy for our kids and for our future kids and future generations that are going to experience this building.”
From 1950s Buildings to a Modern Campus
The new arena and auditorium replace the district’s original gymnasium and auditorium, which were built in the 1950s. Those older structures had to be demolished, and a tornado delayed the construction timeline. Despite the setbacks, the project moved forward, and the open house allowed attendees to experience the finished spaces for the first time.
Holder described his reaction to seeing students rehearse in the brand‑new auditorium: “Yesterday I got to watch the kids practicing inside the auditorium, and both times I got chill bumps. As a matter of fact, I’m getting a little chill bumps right now as I’m talking about it.”
New Home for the Bulldogs
The Sulphur Bulldogs, who have long played away games without a true home base, will finally take the court in the new arena this December. The team’s coach and players expressed excitement about finally having a venue to call their own.
“It’s been a rough go of it, I’m not gonna lie,” Holder admitted, acknowledging the challenges the program faced without a dedicated facility.
Keeping Talent Local
One of the district’s strategic goals is to encourage graduates to return to Sulphur after completing college. Holder emphasized that a state‑of‑the‑art facility can help retain talent and strengthen the community.
“We pride ourselves in wanting to have kids that grow up in Sulphur and come back to Sulphur, and I hope a facility like this can help that process,” he said.
Community Response
Local residents, parents and business owners attended the open house, many noting the positive impact the new building will have on the town’s cultural and economic life. The performing‑arts center is expected to host concerts, theater productions and community events, while the arena will attract regional tournaments and gatherings.
Overall, the project demonstrates how a focused bond initiative, combined with community support, can deliver lasting infrastructure that benefits students, families and the broader Sulphur area for years to come.
