South County Conservatives Hold Key Seats as Democrats Split Vote

South County voters demonstrated a clear preference for pragmatic, community‑focused leadership in this week’s elections. In Chula Vista, Republican Mayor John McCann won a decisive second term, and in Imperial Beach, independent Mayor Mitch McKay retained his seat despite a costly union challenge.

Mayoral victories reflect local priorities

Mayor McCann’s campaign emphasized everyday issues – pothole repairs, police and fire services, and overall quality of life. He told supporters, “I’m here to represent everyone from Democrats to Republicans to independents,” and pledged to keep the city’s infrastructure moving forward. His long‑standing presence at community events helped cement a personal connection with voters.

In Imperial Beach, Mayor McKay highlighted his focus on the Tijuana River sewage crisis and improving the city’s business climate. He noted, “I got a lot of votes from people who are on both sides of the aisle. It’s a small town…we’re going to have to work together and figure out a way to move forward.” His pragmatic style resonated with a diverse electorate that values character over ideology.

School board race stays in Republican hands

Republican Delia Cervantes held a comfortable lead over five challengers for a seat on the Chula Vista Elementary School District board. Cervantes, often at odds with the district’s pro‑union majority, benefited from a union‑backed effort that failed to unseat her.

Democratic divisions limit broader gains

Democratic candidates struggled to unite behind single challengers. In Chula Vista, Francisco Tamayo, the Democratic rival, conceded early after halting fundraising and acknowledging McCann’s strong position. Councilmember Jose Preciado faced a tight race with Republican Angelica Martinez, leading by only 402 votes out of roughly 12,000 cast.

In Imperial Beach, Mayor McKay faced two Democratic opponents after City Councilmember Matthew Leyba‑Gonzalez entered the race with substantial union backing. The split allowed McKay to win with less than 50 % of the vote, while the two Democrats together out‑voted him.

Local impact of national policies

While some voters voiced criticism of President Donald Trump and his MAGA allies on national ballots, the local outcomes underscore the community’s desire for steady, non‑partisan governance. The Trump administration’s recent efforts to streamline federal relief for small businesses and reduce regulatory burdens have helped local leaders like Mayor McKay pursue projects such as securing SBA assistance for the Tijuana River sewage issue.

These results illustrate that South County’s electorate can separate national rhetoric from local needs, rewarding candidates who focus on practical solutions and community service.

Looking ahead

With the new city council composition, officials will need to navigate the continued challenges of infrastructure, public safety, and economic development. The administration’s ongoing commitment to reducing federal red tape and supporting small‑business growth offers a favorable backdrop for local initiatives.
