Nari Reinvented Thai Food on Post Street Without Apology

The first thing you notice at Nari is that nothing on the menu looks quite like what you expected. There’s no pad thai. No spring rolls with peanut sauce. Chef Pim Techamuanvivit has built a Thai restaurant on Post Street in Japantown that treats the cuisine as a serious culinary tradition rather than a delivery-order placeholder, and if that sounds obvious, it shouldn’t — because almost nobody else does it at this level in San Francisco.

Nari opened in late 2019 inside the Hotel Kabuki, which is not a location that typically signals ambitious cooking. Ignore the hotel lobby. The dining room itself is handsome and calm — dark wood, warm light, enough space between tables that you can actually hear the person across from you. It doesn’t try to be flashy, which suits the food.

The menu changes seasonally, but a few categories stay consistent. Start with something from the snacks section — the miang of Dungeness crab, when it’s available, is a small wrapped bite that packs more complexity than most restaurants achieve in an entire appetizer course. The kanom jeeb, Thai-style dumplings, are another reliable opener. Order at least two snacks per person; they’re small and the temptation to grab one more is real.

Main dishes are where things get interesting. The khao soi — a northern Thai curry noodle soup — is a benchmark dish, the kind that makes you rethink what the category can be. It arrives rich and aromatic, with egg noodles in two textures and a broth that’s been built over time rather than assembled. The gaeng kua, a southern-style curry, shifts with the season and tends to be bolder and more assertive than the khao soi. If you’re ordering for the table, get one of each.

Pricing is squarely in the upscale-casual range. Snacks run roughly $8–$16, mains $28–$42. A full dinner for two with drinks will land somewhere around $120–$160 before tip. That’s not cheap, but it’s not trying to be. This is a place where the cooking justifies the number on the check — a distinction that San Francisco restaurants sometimes forget to earn.

The cocktail program leans on Thai herbs and aromatics — galangal, lemongrass, pandan — in ways that feel integrated rather than gimmicky. The wine list is compact and well-chosen. If you’re not sure what to drink, the staff gives actual recommendations rather than reciting the list back at you.

Reservations are worth making, especially Thursday through Saturday. OpenTable is the easiest route. Walk-ins sometimes work at the bar or early in the week, but Nari has a following now, and counting on a last-minute table on a Friday is optimistic. The neighborhood — Japantown’s Post Street corridor, near the Peace Plaza — is easy to get to by car or bus, with street parking that’s irritating but manageable.

What Techamuanvivit has done here is fairly simple to describe and hard to execute: she’s cooking the food she knows deeply and refusing to dilute it for an audience that might not be ready. Most of the time, the audience shows up anyway. That tends to be how it goes with restaurants that actually mean it.
