Milwaukee – A dramatic rescue unfolded on the north side of the city on Nov. 3 when a truck careened into a parked car near the intersection of 6th and Chambers, setting both vehicles ablaze. Within seconds, smoke and flames filled the street, prompting nearby witnesses to act without hesitation.
Witnesses hear crash, see fire
Joe Bednarek, who was working in the area, heard the crash and initially thought it might be a crime. He began recording video when a bystander shouted that a person was still trapped inside the truck. “Tons of smoke. I’ve never seen so much smoke from a vehicle and then all of a sudden that smoke just lit up like a ball of fire,” Bednarek said.
Instinctively, Bednarek ran toward the burning vehicle. “I just ran. Instinctively ran to the vehicle,” he recalled.
Rescue effort begins
Milwaukee police reported that the driver lost control just before 10 a.m., striking the parked car and igniting both trucks. Bednarek tried to break a window, but the glass would not budge. The driver managed to open the door, allowing another witness, Ryan Eigenfeld, to reach in and pull the man out.
“The look on his face. He was absolutely disoriented. He didn’t understand what was happening,” Eigenfeld described. He and Bednarek worked together, dragging the 63‑year‑old driver away from the inferno.
“You just go. There wasn’t even hesitation. I didn’t feel any fear towards it. You just went to help,” Eigenfeld added.
Flames spread quickly
Less than thirty seconds after the driver was extracted, the entire truck was engulfed in flames. “Within a minute, things could have been dramatically different,” Eigenfeld warned.
The driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Police have not yet released details about his condition, and no other injuries were reported.
Community response
The swift actions of Bednarek, Eigenfeld, and other onlookers underscore the strong sense of neighborly responsibility that characterizes Milwaukee neighborhoods. Their willingness to risk personal safety to aid a stranger reflects the community’s commitment to looking out for one another.
Milwaukee police continue to investigate the cause of the crash. The department thanked the rescuers for their bravery and reminded residents to call 911 immediately when accidents involve fire or hazardous conditions.
