AFC Week 8: Chiefs’ Emmett Johnson, Jets’ Braelon Allen, and Titans’ Jacob Martin Shine

While the NFL’s marquee names often dominate headlines, Week 8 of the 2026 season reminded fans that hidden talent can turn games. The AFC’s secret superstars—Kansas City Chiefs rookie running back Emmett Johnson, New York Jets power back Braelon Allen, and Tennessee Titans edge‑rusher Jacob Martin—each delivered standout performances that could shape their teams’ fortunes.

Emmett Johnson Gives the Chiefs a New Dimension

The Chiefs entered the offseason determined to revamp their ground game. After re‑hiring offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and signing Kenneth Walker III to a three‑year, $43.05 million deal, Kansas City added Nebraska running back Emmett Johnson with the 151st overall pick in the fifth round of the 2026 draft. Johnson’s college résumé was impressive: in 2025 he logged 251 carries for 1,450 yards, 12 touchdowns, 68 forced missed tackles and 36 runs of at least 10 yards.

Johnson’s NFL debut came against the Denver Broncos. Although Kansas City fell 28‑24, the rookie made his presence felt. He caught five passes on five targets for 128 yards and a touchdown, and his lone rush for 15 yards broke at least five tackles. “If Emmett can come in and be a change of pace, break tackles and make plays, defenses can’t relax,” quarterback Patrick Mahomes said after the game. Mahomes added that the Chiefs plan to use Johnson more as the season progresses, complementing Walker’s workload.

Braelon Allen Emerges as the Jets’ Offensive Engine

New York’s backfield has been dominated by Breece Hall, but injuries have thrust Braelon Allen into the spotlight. The 6‑foot‑1‑quarter, 235‑pound power back impressed at Wisconsin, amassing 592 carries for 3,482 yards, 25 touchdowns, 143 forced missed tackles and 77 runs of at least 10 yards from 2021‑2023. Yet he was a fourth‑round pick (134th overall) in the 2024 draft.

With Hall sidelined by a quadriceps injury, Allen seized the opportunity. Against the Las Vegas Raiders he logged 21 carries for 147 yards and a touchdown, despite the Jets’ 38‑33 loss. Since Week 5, Allen has forced 20 missed tackles—second only to Detroit’s Jahmyr Gibbs—and recorded the most runs of 10+ yards (18) among all players in that span.

“Guys up front moving people, just being patient and letting the game come to me,” Allen explained post‑game. He emphasized that the ultimate goal is victory, noting that “when you don’t get that done it’s hard to enjoy.” The Jets, now 2‑6, hope Allen’s production will translate into more wins as the season unfolds.

Jacob Martin’s Aggressive Pass Rush Boosts the Titans

In Tennessee, edge‑rusher Jacob Martin arrived on a two‑year, $9 million contract with $4.5 million guaranteed. When asked about his mindset, Martin replied, “We go in there and f**k s**t up,” underscoring his aggressive approach.

Martin’s impact was immediate. Facing the Cincinnati Bengals, he recorded three sacks, five quarterback hits and two hurries in a 43‑36 overtime loss. Although quarterback Joe Burrow threw for 462 yards and six total touchdowns, Martin’s pressure helped keep the game competitive. He has already tallied seven sacks and 29 pressures this season, proving he can fill the void left by the Titans’ trade of interior lineman Jeffery Simmons.

Martin’s performance highlights the importance of a relentless pass rush for Tennessee’s defense, and his teammates echo his sentiment: the entire defensive line must continue to “f**k s**t up” to protect the team’s chances.

Why These Players Matter

All three athletes embody the “secret superstar” narrative: overlooked in the media, yet delivering tangible results when given the chance. Their contributions align with the AFC’s broader goal of depth and versatility, offering coaches more options and fans reasons for optimism as the season heads toward its second half.

For local fans, these stories serve as a reminder that great football often comes from unexpected places. Whether you’re cheering in Kansas City, New York, or Nashville, keep an eye on these emerging talents—they may become the next household names in the league.
