Florida’s 7th Congressional District Race Awaits Final Count as Candidates Near 2,000‑Vote Margin

Florida’s 7th Congressional District remains too close to call as the race between Republican Ryan Elijah and Democrat Bale Dalton narrows to a margin of under 2,000 votes, roughly 0.53 percentage points. Elijah has announced a victory claim, but officials have not yet certified a winner.

Outstanding ballots could tip the balance

The Seminole County Supervisor of Elections reports that hundreds of vote‑by‑mail ballots still require signature cures, and several provisional ballots await review by the canvassing board. Those ballots are the primary focus for both campaigns, as they could determine whether the margin drops to the 0.5‑percent threshold that triggers an automatic recount under Florida law.

“Broadly speaking, if there was any chance of the result changing, it would probably be where those ballots are coming from,” said Aubrey Jewett, a political science professor at the University of Central Florida. “Seminole County voted pretty strongly for Bale Dalton, and the Volusia County part of the district voted pretty strongly for Ryan Elijah.”

Recount expectations

Jewett noted that recounts in Florida rarely alter the outcome. Most recounts are conducted by machine and confirm the original tally, with only a handful of votes shifting. “Races that have changed after a recount have generally been closer than this one,” he added.

Voters with mail ballots that need signature cures have until 5 p.m. Thursday, November 5, to submit their cure affidavits. Any additional ballots deemed eligible will be added to the ongoing canvass.

What the numbers mean for voters

The current 0.53‑point gap places the race just above the recount trigger. Should the margin narrow to 0.5 points or less after all outstanding ballots are counted, Florida law mandates an automatic recount to ensure every legal vote is counted.

Both campaigns are urging patience while the election officials complete their review. Elijah’s team emphasizes the narrow lead as a sign of strong support, while Dalton’s campaign stresses the importance of counting every eligible ballot before declaring a winner.

Local impact

The 7th District covers parts of Seminole and Volusia counties, areas that have shown distinct preferences for each candidate. The final outcome will shape the district’s representation in the U.S. House, influencing how federal policies affect local families, businesses, and faith communities.

As the count progresses, residents are encouraged to stay informed through official county updates and to participate in the democratic process by ensuring their ballots are properly completed and submitted.
