Beatrice West Water Project Issues Boil‑Water Advisory After Line Break

BEATRICE, Neb. – The Lower Big Blue Natural Resources District announced Tuesday that customers of the Beatrice West Water Project must boil all drinking and cooking water for one minute. The advisory follows a sudden loss of pressure that caused a water‑line break in the system serving the western part of the city.

Why the advisory was issued

District officials said the break introduced the possibility of contamination, prompting the precautionary boil‑water notice. “We are taking every step to protect public health,” said Mike Jensen, the district’s water‑operations manager. “Until our testing confirms the water is safe, boiling is the simplest and most effective safeguard for families.

What residents should do

Customers are instructed to bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, making baby formula, or washing dishes. For other household needs, such as bathing or flushing toilets, the district recommends using an alternative water source, such as bottled water or water from a neighbor’s tap that is not affected.

Testing and restoration efforts

The Lower Big Blue team has begun comprehensive sampling of the affected line and surrounding mains. Laboratory analysis will focus on bacterial indicators, including E. coli, and any chemical residues that could have entered the system during the pressure loss. “Our priority is to restore confidence in the water supply as quickly as possible,” Jensen added. The district expects to release preliminary results within 48 hours, with full certification of safety to follow.

Impact on the community

Beatrice residents rely on the West Water Project for daily household needs, and the advisory has prompted local schools and businesses to adjust their water usage. The Beatrice‑West Elementary School has arranged for bottled water distribution for students, while several small businesses have temporarily switched to filtered water for food preparation.

Looking ahead

Officials emphasized that the line break was an isolated incident caused by a loss of system pressure, not a systemic failure. The district plans to review its infrastructure maintenance schedule to prevent similar events. “We remain committed to providing safe, reliable water to every household,” Jensen concluded.

How to stay informed

Updates will be posted on the Lower Big Blue Natural Resources District website and shared via local radio stations. Residents with questions can call the district’s 24‑hour hotline at 402‑555‑1234 or visit the district office at 123 Main Street, Beatrice.
