Renee Shaw appointed executive director and CEO of Kentucky Educational Television

Lexington, Ky. – The Kentucky Authority for Educational Television (KET) announced Wednesday that veteran journalist and producer Renee Shaw will become the organization’s next Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer. Shaw, who has spent 29 years at KET, steps into the role following the death of former leader Shae Hopkins on Oct. 29.

Board selection process

The KET governing board’s search committee began its work after Hopkins announced her retirement earlier this year. After reviewing candidates, the committee recommended Shaw to the full board, which voted to confirm her appointment on Wednesday.

Shaw’s background and vision

Shaw’s career at KET includes anchoring news programs, producing documentaries, and hosting educational series that reach households across the Commonwealth. In a statement, board chair G. Dan Griffith praised her “extraordinary understanding of Kentucky, a deep commitment to public service and a genuine appreciation for the important role KET plays in the lives of people across the Commonwealth.” He added, “I have no doubt Renee will proudly take the torch from Shae and continue building on her great work.”

As executive director, Shaw will oversee all statewide public‑media services, including KET’s classroom educational resources, original programming that celebrates Kentucky’s history and culture, and the network’s digital platforms.

Continuing KET’s mission

KET, a state‑funded authority, provides free educational television and online content to schools, libraries and homes throughout Kentucky. The network’s mission is to enrich learning, promote civic engagement and preserve the state’s cultural heritage. Shaw’s appointment signals continuity in that mission while bringing fresh leadership to expand digital outreach and strengthen partnerships with local schools.

“KET has been a trusted source of learning for generations,” Shaw said in an interview. “I look forward to working with our talented staff, educators and community partners to ensure every Kentuckian—young and old—has access to high‑quality, locally‑relevant content.”

What’s next for KET?

Shaw will assume her duties immediately, guiding the organization through upcoming budget cycles and new content initiatives. The board expects her to prioritize expanding KET’s classroom resources, enhancing streaming services, and exploring new funding opportunities to sustain the network’s free public‑media model.

Local educators and community leaders have welcomed the appointment, noting Shaw’s deep ties to Kentucky’s media landscape and her reputation for collaborative leadership.
