Durango City Council met on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers to review the City Manager’s proposed 2027 budget, a plan that emphasizes maintaining high‑quality services while improving efficiency across municipal operations. The budget’s focus on prudent spending, competitive employee compensation and the continuation of key capital projects is intended to support the community’s growth and stability.
During the session, the Early Childhood Council of La Plata County presented a request to allocate $350,000 of the 2027 Lodgers’ Tax to expand and stabilize childcare services in Durango through an educator stipend program. Council members noted that the funding would help attract and retain qualified teachers, directly benefiting families seeking reliable early‑education options.
The Transportation Department shared results from its annual Ridership Survey, conducted with Fort Lewis College’s Sustainability by Design class. Of the 117 respondents, ridership satisfaction averaged 8.06 out of 10. However, only 35% agreed that buses arrive on time, while 45% felt safe on the bus. The data will guide future transit improvements to better serve riders and address identified gaps.
City officials also briefed the council on the Flock camera system’s September activity. Police officers performed 412 searches, with assault and battery inquiries comprising the largest share at 26% of total requests. The cameras continue to aid investigations and enhance public safety by providing timely visual evidence for law‑enforcement inquiries.
In addition, the Public Works department provided an update on recent rain‑induced flooding at the Wilson Gulch roundabout near the Maverik gas station in Three Springs. Crews are actively removing mud and debris to restore safe travel conditions, underscoring the city’s commitment to rapid infrastructure response.
Council also voted to consider a future business item that would raise the salary for newly elected councilors to $25,000, a measure slated for discussion at a later meeting.
What’s next: Council will vote on the consideration of budget ordinances at its regular meeting on Nov. 17, and a final vote on the 2027 budget is scheduled for the Dec. 1 regular meeting. Residents are encouraged to review the proposals and submit comments via the city’s “Engage” webpage.
