Hot Springs Police Address Concerns Over ‘Teen Takeovers’

As summer brings a wave of visitors to Hot Springs, Arkansas, the local police are addressing a growing trend known as ‘teen takeovers.’ These gatherings, often organized through social media, involve large groups of young people meeting in public spaces. While some see these events as harmless social gatherings, others express concern over potential safety issues.

Community Concerns and Police Response

Hot Springs Police Chief Chris Chapmond explained that the gatherings can sometimes escalate, leading to street racing, fights, and other dangerous activities. ‘We’ve had a couple of young children caught in crossfire between two shootouts,’ Chapmond noted, highlighting the potential risks involved.

In response, the police department has issued public warnings and increased their presence in downtown areas to prevent these events from spiraling out of control. The goal is to maintain a safe environment for both residents and visitors during the busy summer season.

Parental Involvement and Accountability

Local business manager Jason Barnhouse emphasized the importance of parental involvement, suggesting that parents should engage in conversations with their children about responsible behavior. ‘It’s kind of on the parents to have more discussions with their kids,’ Barnhouse said, advocating for a balanced approach that allows teens to socialize safely.

Chief Chapmond echoed this sentiment, urging parents to stay informed about their children’s activities and to be prepared for accountability if their teens are involved in illegal activities. ‘If your juvenile gets charged, guess who’s going to have to get up out of bed and come get them,’ Chapmond warned, stressing the shared responsibility between law enforcement and families.

As the summer continues, Hot Springs police remain committed to proactive measures that ensure community safety while allowing young people to enjoy their time together responsibly.
