The A Line extension project from Pomona to Claremont has taken a significant step forward. On May 27, the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority awarded a $6.3 million contract to SSH Joint Venture for construction management. This contract is the second major agreement needed before construction can commence.
Project Timeline and Details
Construction on the 2.3-mile extension is expected to begin in 2027 and conclude by late 2031. The extension will enhance connectivity in the region, adding to the A Line’s existing 48 stations along nearly 58 miles, which is touted as the world’s longest light-rail line. The most recent extension opened in September 2025, extending service to Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne, and Pomona.
Habib Balian, CEO of the Construction Authority, explained that the current phase involves SSH Joint Venture evaluating the design, which was initiated by Parsons Transportation Group earlier this year. SSH will be responsible for overseeing the project’s construction, including building parking structures, laying tracks, and installing power substations and stations.
Funding and Future Prospects
The project is funded by $800 million from Senate Bill 125, with $200 million already allocated for design, acquisitions, and permits. The Claremont extension will include infrastructure improvements such as bridges over Garey and Towne Avenues and Indian Hill Boulevard, as well as the relocation of Metrolink and freight tracks.
While the extension to Claremont is progressing, the future of extending the line to Montclair remains uncertain. The San Bernardino County Transportation Authority has withheld funding for this segment, opting instead to explore other transit options.
Ed Reece, Construction Authority Board Chair and Claremont Vice Mayor, expressed confidence in SSH’s ability to deliver value during the preconstruction phase and potentially during the construction phase, pending successful contract negotiations next year.
