Detroit Parents Face School Closures, Seek New Options

As the school year concludes, many Detroit parents are grappling with the challenge of finding new schools for their children due to closures. The Barack Obama Leadership Academy, known for its Afro-centric curriculum, faces potential closure, leaving parents like Takiyah Pearson in a difficult position. She and others must decide whether to search for new schools now or wait, risking falling behind in the process.

School Closures in Detroit

In addition to the uncertainty surrounding the charter school, four schools in the Detroit Public Schools Community District are set to close at the end of the school year: Ann Arbor Trail Magnet Academy, Greenfield-Union Elementary-Middle School, Catherine C. Blackwell Institute, and J.E. Clark Preparatory Academy. A fifth school, Thurgood Marshall Elementary-Middle School, is slated for closure at the end of the 2026-27 school year.

The district began phasing out these schools in 2022 due to high maintenance costs and low enrollment. Despite advance notice, many parents are still weighing their options, whether to enroll their children in reassigned schools or find new ones.

Community Impact and Response

Marcus Langston, raising two granddaughters, is considering the School at Marygrove for its extracurricular activities and student support services. This year’s closures are the most significant in over a decade, though far fewer than the closures between 2000 and 2016, when around 200 schools shut down.

Helena Lazo, co-founder of education nonprofit 482Forward, noted the emotional impact of closures on students and families. Superintendent Nikolai Vitti has taken a different approach, emphasizing community engagement and providing transportation to new schools.

Parents like Tiffany Walls, whose daughter has attended the Obama charter school since kindergarten, express concern over losing community ties. The school’s CEO, Cha-Rhonda Edgerson, is hopeful about securing a new authorizer to keep the school open.

As families navigate these challenges, they are encouraged to plan ahead, though many are still processing the changes. Adero Jenkins, whose daughter attended Ann Arbor Trail, is seeking recommendations for new schools while hoping for a smooth transition.
