Detroit Hosts Summit to Guide Nonprofits on Tax Exemptions

The City of Detroit is taking proactive steps to support local nonprofits, including churches, by hosting a Non-Profit Community Summit on June 10. The event aims to educate these organizations on securing property tax exemptions and preventing foreclosure, a crucial issue for many faith-based groups and other nonprofits.

Understanding Tax Exemptions

Alvin Horhn, Detroit’s Deputy CFO and Assessor, highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting that many nonprofits mistakenly assume they are automatically exempt from property taxes. This misunderstanding has led some organizations, particularly churches, to face foreclosure due to unpaid taxes. Horhn emphasized the need for nonprofits to complete the necessary online application process to secure their exemptions.

The summit, scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon at the Northwest Activities Center, will cover the tax exemption process and eligibility requirements. It will also address other financial concerns such as blight tickets and water bills, offering nonprofits a chance to engage with the city’s Department of Appeals and Hearings.

Supporting Community Efforts

This event is part of Detroit’s broader effort to assist nonprofits in maintaining their vital community services. Horhn expressed the city’s commitment to helping these organizations thrive, acknowledging their significant role in supporting strong communities. He encouraged those considering starting a nonprofit in Detroit to attend the summit to understand the business aspects necessary for success.

The city’s initiative follows a similar event held in December 2025, with plans to continue these summits in the future. Nonprofits interested in attending can register online, ensuring they have the resources and knowledge to navigate the complexities of property tax exemptions effectively.
