Putin Discusses Ukraine Conflict and Peace Talks with Trump

In a recent meeting in St. Petersburg, Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, potential peace agreements with the United States, and his political future. Speaking to senior editors from various news agencies, Putin addressed several key issues.

Ukraine Conflict and Peace Talks

Putin emphasized that controlling the Donbas region and pursuing peace are not mutually exclusive goals. He stated that Russian troops have made significant advances, controlling over 85% of the Donetsk region and 80% of the Zaporizhzhia region. Putin expressed Russia’s willingness to reach a peaceful agreement with Ukraine, based on discussions held with U.S. President Donald Trump in Anchorage. He noted that Russia is prepared to make compromises, but Ukraine must also agree to these terms for the conflict to conclude naturally.

Putin praised Trump’s efforts towards peace, suggesting that the proposals made could serve as a foundation for a peace agreement. He acknowledged that compromises are necessary for both Russia and Ukraine and expressed confidence that these could lead to a resolution.

Putin’s Political Future

When asked about his potential to remain in power until 2036, Putin remarked that only God knows about one’s health and future. He acknowledged that the Russian Constitution allows him to run again in 2030, but he stated that it is too early to discuss this possibility. Putin emphasized the importance of focusing on Russia’s pressing issues rather than his political future.

Economic Outlook

Addressing concerns about the Russian economy, Putin dismissed predictions of economic decline, noting that the Russian economy has grown by 10% over the past three years, outpacing the European Union’s growth. He acknowledged challenges related to inflation and macroeconomic stability but highlighted measures taken by the central bank to address these issues. Putin stated that these measures are showing results, with the key rate being reduced to 14.5%.
