Putin Discusses Potential for Extended Leadership Amidst Constitutional Allowance

During a meeting in St. Petersburg, Russian President Vladimir Putin was questioned about his potential to remain in power until 2036. In response, Putin highlighted the unpredictability of health, stating, “Only God knows if we have enough health – for me, for you, and for everyone gathered here, in order to live until tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, and even more so to solve some of the tasks we face, to achieve the goals that we set for ourselves.”

Putin, who has been in power as either president or prime minister since 1999, noted that the Russian constitution permits him to run for another term in 2030, which could extend his leadership until 2036 if he were to win. However, he expressed that it is too early to discuss such possibilities, saying, “Indeed, the Constitution allows me to run in 2030, but I think it’s too early to talk about it. To be honest, it’s very early. I’m not even thinking about it right now. I’m being completely honest. I don’t even think about it.”

Putin emphasized the importance of addressing the country’s current challenges without being distracted by future political ambitions. He remarked, “The country faces a lot of large-scale and pressing issues. They need to be solved without thinking about it, but thinking about the future of Russia.”

This discussion comes amidst ongoing debates about leadership longevity in Russia, where constitutional amendments have previously been made to allow extended terms for the presidency. Putin’s comments reflect a focus on immediate national concerns over long-term political strategies.
