Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman has intensified his criticism of Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, urging him to release messages from a Kik account that has become a focal point in Platner’s campaign. Fetterman, known for his straightforward style, made the challenge during an appearance on Fox News with host Sean Hannity.
Controversial Kik Account
Fetterman criticized Platner for his past inflammatory remarks and questioned the integrity of his campaign. The Kik account, which Platner’s campaign acknowledged was created in 2016, has been linked to messages allegedly exchanged with women. Fetterman proposed a deal, stating he would wear a suit every day if Platner released the messages to prove there was nothing inappropriate in them.
Fetterman expressed concerns about the age verification on anonymous messaging platforms like Kik, suggesting that Platner should be transparent if he has nothing to hide. Platner’s campaign has not yet responded to requests for comment on this matter.
Broader Campaign Issues
The Kik account is just one of several controversies surrounding Platner’s campaign. He has faced backlash over past Reddit posts and a video in which he appeared to accuse the late Navy SEAL Chris Kyle of inflating his statistics by targeting civilians. Additionally, Platner has been criticized for a Nazi Totenkopf tattoo, which he claimed he got in 2007 without knowing its historical significance.
Despite these controversies, Platner has received endorsements from prominent Democrats, including Sen. Bernie Sanders, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren. They support his bid to unseat Republican Sen. Susan Collins in Maine.
Platner has apologized for his past actions, attributing them to difficulties adjusting to civilian life after military service in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has asked voters to judge him based on his current character rather than his past mistakes.
