Florida Officer Honored After Surviving Gunshots to the Face

In a remarkable testament to courage and resilience, Port St. Lucie Police Sergeant Erik Levasseur has been awarded the Florida’s Finest Award by Senator Ashley Moody. This honor was presented on the Senate floor, recognizing Sgt. Levasseur’s bravery and dedication to law enforcement following a harrowing incident in December 2025.

During a routine call, Sgt. Levasseur and his fellow officers faced an unexpected and dangerous situation. A suspect emerged from a garage with a rifle and opened fire on the officers. In the ensuing confrontation, Sgt. Levasseur was struck twice in the face. Despite the severe injuries, his colleagues managed to subdue the suspect, ensuring the safety of the community.

Sgt. Levasseur’s recovery journey has been challenging, involving five surgeries, including procedures to remove shrapnel from his eyes and reconstructive surgeries on his face. His determination to return to active duty has been unwavering, illustrating his commitment to serving the community he loves.

Senator Moody praised Sgt. Levasseur during the award presentation, stating, “Sergeant Levasseur is a true Florida hero, and we are a safer state because of his courage and those brave enough to answer the call to put others’ safety ahead of their own.”

In addition to the Florida’s Finest Award, Sgt. Levasseur has received several other honors. In March 2026, he was awarded a law enforcement Purple Heart by the Port St. Lucie Police Department. He also received a military Purple Heart from local veteran Staff Sergeant Thomas Matteo, who himself earned six Purple Hearts during his service in Vietnam. Most recently, Sgt. Levasseur was honored with the Valor Award at the First Responders Appreciation Foundation’s annual Law Enforcement Officers Awards luncheon.

Sgt. Levasseur’s story is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and the resilience they demonstrate in the face of adversity. His journey towards recovery and his commitment to returning to duty serve as an inspiration to many in the community and beyond.
