What Exactly Is the Banana Factory, and Should I Go?

Is Cedar Beach just a park where people walk their dogs and let their kids splash around? That’s what I assumed for the first two summers I lived here. Then a friend dragged me to a Thursday evening concert at the bandshell, and I had to completely recalibrate what a free summer night in Allentown could look like.

The Cedar Beach Bandshell sits at the south end of Cedar Beach Park, off the 2700 block of Parkway Boulevard — the same stretch where the Rose Garden gets most of the Instagram attention. The bandshell itself is a 1930s-era covered stage, brick and white trim, the kind of structure that looks like it was designed to be photographed in black and white. But on concert nights, it’s full color: folding chairs scattered across the grass, a food truck or two parked nearby, and a crowd that’s genuinely mixed — retirees with lawn chairs, families with toddlers, twenty-somethings who wandered over from the trail.

The Allentown Parks and Recreation Department runs a summer concert series here most Thursday and Sunday evenings from June through August. Lineups shift from year to year but tend toward crowd-pleasers: classic rock cover bands, Latin music nights, occasional big band or jazz sets. Nothing avant-garde, and that’s kind of the point. This is civic music-making, the kind where people sing along without embarrassment and nobody’s trying to be cool.

What surprised me was how well the setting does the work. The park’s mature trees frame the stage on both sides, so even on a hot August evening there’s actual shade if you set up early enough. Parking fills up along Parkway Boulevard by about 6:30 on popular nights, so I’ve taken to biking in from the west side — there’s a decent path connection through the park. Arrive by 6:15 if you want a good sightline; music usually starts around 7.

Admission is free. The food trucks are the main variable — prices and options change week to week, so I usually eat beforehand and just grab a drink. On a few nights I’ve seen vendors selling Italian ice and kettle corn near the path entrance, which is exactly right for the vibe.

I want to be honest about what this isn’t: it’s not a major music destination, the sound system is adequate rather than impressive, and the bookings won’t make you feel like you discovered anything. But that’s not what I’m going for on a Thursday evening in July. What the bandshell offers is something rarer in practice than in theory — a genuinely public, genuinely free, genuinely pleasant evening outside, in a city where those aren’t always easy to find.

Check the City of Allentown’s Parks and Recreation page or their social channels before you go, since dates occasionally shift for weather or maintenance. Bring a blanket if you have one; the folding chairs go fast. And if you get there and the grass is already covered with families who found this before you did, just know you should have come last summer.
