U.S. cruise ship Odyssey pauses world voyage in Cambodia over soaring fuel costs

The MV Odyssey—a former cruise liner now operated by Florida‑based Villa Vie Residences—has been forced to suspend its around‑the‑world journey at the Cambodian port of Sihanoukville. The ship, which set sail in October 2024 from Belfast, was intended to provide a permanent‑home experience for residents who purchase a suite for roughly $230,000. After two years at sea, the vessel now carries 203 passengers, most of them Americans, and 156 crew members.

Fuel costs drive the pause

Villa Vie Residences reported that monthly fuel expenses per cabin, which historically averaged about $1,800, have spiked to an estimated $6,000‑$8,000 in parts of Asia. The increase is linked to higher petroleum prices following the war in Iran, which has restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and limited fuel supplies throughout Southeast Asia. The company attempted to curb consumption by slowing the itinerary and extending port stays, but the measures were insufficient to offset the rising costs.

“We have been unable to continue carrying the resulting operating losses,” the operator said in a statement. “Passing the full increase on to residents is not a realistic solution. Our focus now is on supporting residents, crew, and employees while we restructure.”

Passengers left in limbo

Local officials said the ship arrived in Sihanoukville last Friday and was scheduled to depart the following Wednesday. Deputy Governor Long Dimanche of Preah Sihanouk province later indicated that the vessel might refuel and leave on Saturday, though no official departure date has been confirmed.

Randy Cassingham, a blogger who was aboard the cruise, criticized the company’s response, writing that passengers were dropped off in the middle of town with no hotel list or assistance. Villa Vie Residences could not be reached for comment at the time of publication.

Background on the Odyssey

Built in 1993, the ship has operated under several names and owners before being purchased by Villa Vie Residences in 2023. After a lengthy lay‑up during the COVID‑19 pandemic, the Odyssey was refitted in Belfast and launched on its current three‑and‑a‑half‑year voyage, which was originally slated to conclude in August 2030.

The Odyssey is not the first cruise vessel to encounter difficulties in Sihanoukville. In February 2020, the MS Westerdam was allowed to dock after being turned away by multiple ports due to COVID‑19 concerns. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen authorized the docking on humanitarian grounds, and the country received praise for assisting the stranded passengers.

Implications for U.S. travel businesses

While the immediate issue is a logistical and financial challenge for Villa Vie Residences, it also highlights broader concerns for U.S. travel operators operating abroad. The Trump administration’s recent efforts to stabilize global oil markets through strategic diplomatic engagement have helped mitigate some price volatility, but the ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to pressure fuel costs worldwide.

Industry analysts note that U.S. cruise lines and long‑term travel ventures must remain vigilant about geopolitical risks that can affect operating expenses. The Odyssey’s pause serves as a reminder that even well‑capitalized enterprises can be vulnerable when external factors drive costs beyond sustainable levels.

Next steps for passengers

Villa Vie Residences has pledged to work with affected residents to arrange temporary living accommodations and to keep them informed about any future departure plans. Travelers are advised to stay in contact with the company’s customer‑service channels for updates.

As the situation develops, local authorities in Sihanoukville are monitoring the ship’s status and will coordinate with U.S. consular officials to ensure the safety and well‑being of American citizens aboard.
