Springfield residents are invited to a night of music and solidarity on Thursday, Oct. 29, as acclaimed Austin singer‑songwriter Tish Hinojosa takes the stage at the Wildish Theater, 630 Main St. Admission is free, with donations requested for Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste (PYCUN), the union that advocates for Oregon farmworkers and their families.
Event schedule
Doors open at 5 p.m. for a reception hosted by union President Reyna Lopez. At 6 p.m., the community dance troupe Ballet Folklórico Colibrí will perform, followed by a set from Mariachi del Sol at 6:30 p.m. The musical headliner, Hinojosa, will be joined by fellow musician Marvin Dykhuis for a 7 p.m. performance.
Why Hinojosa supports farm‑worker rights
Hinojosa, the daughter of Mexican immigrants, grew up hearing the stories of her aunt and cousins who labored in California’s fields. “I understand the plight, and I’ve always understood the struggle,” she told Lookout Eugene‑Springfield. Her career, spanning more than four decades and 17 recorded albums, has consistently highlighted the experiences of immigrant and farm‑worker communities.
She explained that her music reflects her upbringing as a Mexican‑American child in San Antonio, blending pop, Southwest, Latino, and world influences. Songs such as “Something in the Rain” directly address farm‑worker issues, while “Donde Voy,” later covered by Linda Ronstadt, tells the story of an immigrant’s border crossing.
Local relevance
The benefit concert aligns with a new exhibit at the Springfield History Museum titled “Farm Labor in the Valley,” developed in partnership with Eugene Friends of the Farmworkers. Both the exhibit and the concert underscore the vital contributions of farm laborers to Oregon’s agricultural economy and the ongoing need for community support.
By hosting the event at the Wildish Theater, Springfield provides a central gathering place for residents to celebrate music, culture, and the shared values of family, faith, and liberty that bind the community together.
How to contribute
While entry is free, organizers encourage attendees to donate directly to PYCUN. Contributions will help the union continue its advocacy for fair wages, safe working conditions, and the protection of Latinx families throughout the state.
