The Sheridan Community Land Trust (SCLT) began in 2006 after a community needs survey revealed strong local support for land conservation and historic preservation. Now, two decades later, the nonprofit is renewing that spirit of community involvement by inviting residents to share their ideas for the Trust’s next projects.
Why the new outreach matters
“We’ve had success developing projects in conservation, land protection, trails, recreation, and historic preservation,” said Chris Vrba, SCLT’s Marketing and Development director. “Continuing to reach out to the community is essential because we can’t always predict what people will want next.”
How residents can participate
SCLT is asking Sheridan County residents to submit suggestions through an online form and a series of town‑hall style listening sessions. The Trust hopes to capture ideas ranging from new trail connections to the preservation of historic sites, as well as innovative uses of conserved land that benefit families and local businesses.
Past achievements guide the future
Since its inception, SCLT has protected over 1,200 acres of open space, created more than 15 miles of multi‑use trails, and restored several historic structures. These projects have provided families with safe outdoor recreation, supported local tourism, and reinforced the county’s heritage.
Community voice at the forefront
“If we don’t know exactly what residents are looking for, we risk missing opportunities that could strengthen our community,” Vrba explained. “Someone might have a fantastic idea that we simply haven’t heard yet.” By gathering input now, SCLT aims to prioritize projects that align with the values of families, faith‑based groups, and individual liberty advocates who cherish stewardship of the land.
Next steps
The Trust will review all submissions over the coming months and incorporate the most popular and feasible ideas into its upcoming five‑year plan. Residents are encouraged to visit the SCLT website, attend the scheduled listening sessions, or contact the organization directly to share their thoughts.
Through this collaborative approach, the Sheridan Community Land Trust hopes to continue its legacy of protecting the county’s natural and historic resources while responding to the evolving needs of its citizens.
