FSU President Addresses Football Program Concerns and Announces Interim AD

Florida State University President Richard McCullough sent a candid letter to Seminoles supporters on Tuesday, recognizing the disappointment surrounding the football program’s 3‑4 record (1‑3 in ACC play) as the team prepares to host Clemson on Saturday.

Direct communication with the fan base

“I hear you. I understand your frustration,” McCullough wrote. “We are not asking you to lower your expectations; we share them. We are not asking you to ignore the results. We are committed to changing them, and we are not asking you to believe that everything is fine. We know it is not.”

The president’s message came amid ongoing uncertainty after the university dismissed athletic director Mike Alford last month. Coach Mike Norvell, now in his seventh season, sits with a 41‑38 overall record and only five Power‑Four wins since the start of the 2024 season, leaving his position under intense scrutiny.

Interim leadership and next steps

McCullough, together with Board of Trustees chairman Peter Collins, announced Bruce Warwick as the interim athletic director. Warwick will oversee day‑to‑day operations while the university conducts a comprehensive review of its athletics structure.

“We have been evaluating every aspect of our athletics organization, including defining the role, responsibilities and expectations for our next athletics director,” McCullough wrote. “That work requires honest assessments, difficult conversations, and a realistic analysis of the immense changes and challenges in athletics over the past several years. That work is nearing completion, which means we will be able to begin the search for a new athletics director soon.”

Financial considerations and conference issues

If the university ultimately decides to move on from Coach Norvell, the contract includes a buyout approaching $50 million. The simultaneous search for a new head coach and a permanent athletic director would present a significant financial and operational challenge.

McCullough also highlighted the revenue gap between the ACC and the Power‑Five conferences (Big Ten and SEC). Florida State and Clemson previously sued the ACC over potential exit costs, settling in March 2025. The settlement indicated that leaving the conference could cost Florida State roughly $75 million by 2030, when current television deals expire.

Vision for the future

Despite the setbacks, McCullough reaffirmed the university’s long‑term goals. “Our vision has not changed,” he said. “Florida State should compete for championships, develop exceptional student‑athletes, attract outstanding coaches and personnel, and operate with the resources, leadership, and commitment necessary to succeed at the highest level of college athletics.”

The president’s transparent approach aims to reassure a passionate fan base that the university is taking decisive action to restore the Seminoles’ competitive standing while preserving the program’s financial health.
