TYLER, Texas – Gregg County will hold an online auction beginning November 1 and running through December 1, offering a wide range of surplus items to the public. The auction includes heavy equipment, vehicles, office furniture, and miscellaneous items, providing an opportunity for local businesses and individuals to acquire useful assets at competitive prices.
County officials explain the purpose
County Judge Bill Stoudt said the auction is part of a routine process to replace aging equipment with newer models. “We do about three auctions a year to rotate our equipment; older equipment, replace it with new equipment. Take good equipment and possibly trade it in, get better equipment,” Stoudt explained. He added that selling items online helps the county achieve higher sale prices and faster turnover, noting that the market now extends “the entire country.”
Details of the auction
The auction will be conducted entirely online, allowing bidders from across the United States to participate. Items are located at several sites throughout Gregg County, and a partial inventory has already been released. Among the listed items are a Mack dump truck, various trailers, a Chevrolet pickup equipped with toolboxes, road‑painting equipment, and a selection of office furniture, including a leather couch and love seat.
Judge B.H. Jameson, who also owns an auto dealership, said he regularly purchases vehicles from city, county, and state auctions. “As a rule, they are one‑owner vehicles and usually well‑maintained,” Jameson said. He expects to see bids ranging from 25 to 60 percent above the reserve price, depending on the day of the week and the type of buyer. “If you have someone who’s wanting it for themselves, they’re always going to pay more money than anybody that wants to buy it to resell it,” he added.
What’s available
In addition to the heavy equipment, the auction includes miscellaneous items such as trailers, office desks, and a box of Glock holsters. While the full list has not been released, the county has confirmed that about twenty gallons of shell casings will also be offered.
Potential bidders are encouraged to review the online catalog before the auction opens for viewing on Friday. The county hopes the sale will generate revenue that can be redirected toward new purchases and ongoing county projects.
How to participate
Interested parties can register on the county’s auction website, where they will find detailed descriptions, photos, and bidding instructions. Bidding will commence on November 1 and close on December 1. The county expects the online format to attract a broader pool of buyers, which should result in higher returns for the community.
Judge Stoudt emphasized that the auction reflects Gregg County’s commitment to responsible stewardship of public assets. “We want to make sure we’re using taxpayer‑funded equipment efficiently and getting the best value for the county,” he said.
