Wake County schools hire engineering firm to assess HVAC at 100 campuses

Wake County Public Schools announced a major step toward solving persistent heating, ventilation and air‑conditioning (HVAC) problems that have disrupted classrooms across the district. The board is issuing a request for qualifications (RFQ) to hire an engineering firm that will assess the HVAC systems at about 100 campuses – roughly one‑half of the district’s schools.

Why the assessment matters

District officials say the selected firm will provide detailed recommendations for repairs, upgrades and a longer‑term maintenance strategy. “We understand what the issues are, we acknowledge the disruptions and this is the first step into seeking solutions,” said Veronica Hill, the district’s newly appointed chief of facilities and operations. Hill, who began her role two months ago, added that the outside firm brings advanced technology and independent expertise that will free up current staff to focus on day‑to‑day operations.

Scope of the project

The RFQ targets schools with older HVAC equipment or those that have logged the highest number of complaints. The district’s own health‑inspection data show that more than one‑third of its 200 schools had a documented heating or cooling issue at the time of the most recent inspections. Dozens of additional schools have been forced to close early on extreme temperature days, even when no formal defect was recorded.

Hill explained that the initial batch of 100 schools was chosen based on a “threshold” that identified the most urgent needs. “The rest we will put on a structured, or staggered or tiered schedule as they approach that threshold,” she said, indicating that further assessments could follow as funding and capacity allow.

Financial picture

The district estimates the assessment contract will cost between $500,000 and $1 million. This expense comes after years of deferred maintenance that have accumulated to more than $200 million in outstanding work across the system.

Community impact

Students, teachers and parents have repeatedly voiced frustration over uncomfortable classroom conditions, even when outdoor temperatures are moderate. By bringing in external expertise, the district hopes to restore reliable indoor environments, reduce class interruptions, and ultimately support better learning outcomes.

Local families can expect updates as the selection process moves forward. The district plans to post the list of awarded firms and a timeline for assessments on its website once a contract is finalized.

Next steps

After the engineering firm completes its evaluations, Wake County officials will review the recommendations and develop a phased implementation plan. The goal is to address the most critical repairs first, while establishing a sustainable maintenance program that prevents future system failures.

For now, the district’s focus remains on securing the right partner to guide this essential work and on keeping students safe and comfortable while they learn.
