Seven campuses within the Granbury Independent School District (GISD) have been designated as Purple Star Schools by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), a distinction that acknowledges the district’s commitment to serving military‑connected students and their families. The honors were announced during the GISD Board of Trustees meeting on Oct. 19, according to South Texas News.
The recognized schools include the Emma Roberson Early Learning Academy; Acton, Baccus, Brawner, and Oakwoods Elementary Schools; Granbury Middle School; and Stars High School. The Purple Star designation applies to both the 2026‑27 and 2027‑28 academic years, ensuring continued support for military families throughout the district.
Deputy Superintendent Tammy Clark praised the achievement, stating, “I’m excited to tell you about the work some of our schools have done” to earn the award. She noted that TEA honors schools for “meeting the unique needs of our military‑connected students and their families,” and added that all GISD campuses have previously earned the designation.
Specific staff members were highlighted for their contributions. At Emma Roberson Early Learning Center, Kellie Pollock and Shelly Kissinger were recognized; Acton Elementary’s efforts were led by Ammie Hill and Shanna McPherson; Baccus Elementary cited Lacey Padgett and Karmon Chandler; Brawner Elementary honored Sandy Ruiz and Charley Henderson; Oakwoods Elementary named Chelsey Gibson and Brittney Soudenmire; Granbury Middle School highlighted Ben Sherley and Sue Barr; and Stars High School recognized Margaret Rodriguez and Michael Sorondo.
The district’s communications director, Ryan Cox, received commendation for his role in the Purple Star process, while school liaison Heather Jaynes, who works with Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, assists with professional development and new‑student transitions. Clark emphasized that these collaborative efforts help military‑connected students thrive within the “Granbury ISD Pirate Nation.”
South Texas News reported that the Purple Star program encourages schools to provide tailored information, resources, and a welcoming environment for military families, reinforcing GISD’s broader mission to support the community’s educational needs. The district plans to continue its focus on military‑family outreach and will report progress at future board meetings.
