GKN Aerospace Allocates $4M for Garden Grove Evacuees Post-Chemical Crisis

In response to the recent chemical tank crisis in Garden Grove, GKN Aerospace has announced a significant financial commitment to support the affected community. The company is allocating $4 million towards community initiatives, with $3 million specifically directed to the Orange County United Way’s OC Community Resilience Fund. This fund is designed to provide short-term assistance to residents and businesses impacted by the crisis.

Community Support Initiatives

GKN Aerospace’s senior vice president, Steve Carlin, emphasized the importance of working with trusted local organizations to expedite assistance to those in need. The remaining $1 million will be used to support various community initiatives across Orange County, demonstrating the company’s commitment to helping the community recover and move forward.

The crisis began on May 21 when a storage tank at the Garden Grove facility, containing the flammable liquid methyl methacrylate, posed a significant explosion risk. This led to the evacuation of approximately 50,000 residents in Orange County. Authorities and experts worked tirelessly to mitigate the threat, and by May 25, the risk of explosion was eliminated, allowing most evacuees to return home. The final evacuation orders were lifted on May 26.

Ongoing Cleanup Efforts

The cleanup process is still underway, with the Orange County Health Care Agency overseeing the safe removal and disposal of the neutralized chemical. Residents may notice temporary odors during this process, but officials assure that air monitoring will be conducted to ensure safety.

For those seeking more information about available funds and resources, the Orange County United Way encourages residents to call 2-1-1, option 7.
