Washington Early Voting Surges with Drop Boxes as State Defends Election Integrity

Washington state voters are answering the call to vote early, with 705,231 ballots returned as of Friday afternoon. A strong 66.4% of those votes were deposited in drop boxes, reflecting the clear preference for a reliable, non‑postal method of voting.

County‑by‑County Progress

Jefferson County leads the pack, already having 32.8% of its registered voters submit ballots. Five additional counties—San Juan, Asotin, Thurston, Lincoln and Skagit—have surpassed the 20% mark. The three most populous counties—King, Snohomish and Pierce—together account for 47% of the mailed‑in or drop‑box ballots, underscoring the statewide momentum.

Early Turnout Compared to 2022

So far, 13.7% of Washington’s 5.15 million registered voters have cast a ballot. This is only a slight dip from the 13.9% recorded at the same point in the 2022 cycle, indicating that early voting remains robust despite the challenges.

Secretary of State Steve Hobbs’ Outlook

Secretary of State Steve Hobbs says he expects final turnout to approach, but not exceed, the 64.6% turnout of the 2022 election. “I hope it’s higher,” Hobbs said, noting that competitive statewide races typically drive higher participation. While there is no high‑profile Senate contest this cycle, Hobbs remains confident that the early voting surge will translate into a strong overall turnout.

Drop Boxes Preferred Over Postal Service

Election officials have repeatedly warned voters to avoid relying on the U.S. Postal Service, citing reduced service and delayed postmarks. Since August, the state has urged voters to use drop boxes or, if mailing ballots, to have them postmarked at the post office at least a week before Election Day. More than 20,000 ballots were rejected in the August primary because of late postmarks, reinforcing the need for timely handling.

Addressing Ballot Challenges

To date, 4,229 ballots have been challenged. Of those, 2,026 featured signatures that did not match registration records, and 1,374 were unsigned. Voters with challenged ballots will be given an opportunity to cure the issues and have their votes counted.

Federal Threats and the Trump Administration’s Response

Secretary Hobbs warned that election officers continue to face a “maelstrom of challenges and threats” from the federal government. He noted that the federal government has been less forthcoming with real‑time security information than in past cycles. Nonetheless, the Trump administration has taken decisive steps to safeguard the election process. President Trump’s team sued California to block the counting of ballots they allege were cast by illegal immigrants, and federal monitors have been dispatched to key counties, including King County, to ensure transparency.

Washington Attorney General Nick Brown filed a brief opposing the federal demand, but the administration’s actions demonstrate a commitment to protecting the integrity of the vote against unlawful participation.

Looking Ahead

Hobbs expects federal election observers in several counties, especially where the competitive 3rd Congressional District race is underway. He emphasized that Washington will continue to cooperate with legitimate oversight while rejecting any overreach that could intimidate voters.

As the November 3 election approaches, Washington voters are urged to use drop boxes, verify signatures, and stay informed about both state guidance and federal developments that aim to keep the ballot process secure and accessible.
