Fargo, ND – North Dakota State University kicked off its 11th annual Giving Day on Tuesday morning, launching a 24‑hour fundraising marathon that will run until 8 a.m. Wednesday. The university’s Foundation hopes the community‑wide effort will exceed the nearly $3 million raised from more than 1,500 donors last year.
Community focus and goals
Kira Sornsin, director of marketing and communications for the NDSU Foundation, emphasized that the day is less about a single dollar amount and more about bringing together students, families, alumni and local supporters. “It is really about bringing the community together, raising awareness about the great things that happen here at NDSU and providing a ton of support for our students, faculty, and staff,” Sornsin said.
The fundraiser directs contributions to three primary areas: student scholarships, academic programs and the university’s athletic department. By expanding participation, the Foundation aims to create a broader base of donors who can sustain these critical resources year after year.
How to give
Donors can contribute through the official NDSU Giving Day website, which lists specific funding categories, matching‑gift opportunities and challenge grants. The site also highlights stories of students and athletes who have benefited from past donations, illustrating the tangible impact of community support.
Local businesses and civic groups have already pledged to match donations, further encouraging individuals to give. Sornsin noted that these partnerships amplify each contribution, making every dollar stretch farther toward scholarships and team equipment.
Why the fundraiser matters
Scholarships funded by Giving Day help reduce the financial burden on North Dakota families, allowing more students to pursue higher education without excessive debt. In addition, athletic funding supports facilities, travel and equipment for the university’s renowned sports programs, which draw regional pride and foster school spirit.
University officials see the event as a barometer of community engagement. Higher participation signals strong local backing for the institution’s mission to educate future leaders and maintain a vibrant campus life.
Looking ahead
While the exact total for this year remains to be seen, the Foundation is optimistic that the combined effort of donors, matching partners and volunteers will set a new record. Sornsin encouraged anyone who can give, no matter the amount, to join the 24‑hour push and help NDSU continue its tradition of academic excellence and athletic achievement.
