The New York Knicks emerged victorious in a thrilling Game 1 of the NBA Finals, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 105-95 at the Frost Bank Center. This win marks the Knicks’ 12th consecutive playoff victory, the second-longest streak in NBA history.
The game was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams showcasing strong offensive plays. The Knicks initially took a 12-7 lead, but the Spurs responded with a 20-5 run, led by rookie Dylan Harper Jr., to close the first quarter.
Knicks’ star guard Jalen Brunson faced challenges early on, leaving the game with a knee injury after a collision with Spurs forward Harrison Barnes. Despite this setback, Brunson returned to the court in the second quarter, much to the relief of Knicks fans.
Brunson’s resilience was tested again when Spurs center Luke Kornet stepped on his ankle. Yet, he persevered, scoring eight consecutive points for the Knicks. The Spurs, however, maintained a seven-point lead at halftime.
The third quarter saw the Knicks struggling initially, scoring only two points in the first five minutes, while the Spurs extended their lead to 14. However, the Knicks capitalized on an opportunity when Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama temporarily left the court due to discomfort.
With Karl-Anthony Towns leading the charge, the Knicks narrowed the gap, and the quarter ended with both teams tied at 76. In the final quarter, Brunson’s leadership helped the Knicks build a six-point lead midway through.
As the Spurs attempted a comeback, the Knicks responded with a decisive 11-0 run, silencing the San Antonio crowd, which included notable Knicks fans like Timothée Chalamet, Ben Stiller, and Tracy Morgan.
Brunson finished the game with a high of 30 points, despite a challenging shooting night. When asked about his injuries post-game, Brunson assured fans he would be fine and emphasized the importance of learning and improving as the series progresses.
Unusual Incident During the Game
During the fourth quarter, a fan disrupted the game by running onto the court to take a selfie with Wembanyama. Security quickly intervened, and a jump ball was called as officials could not determine possession at the time of the interruption. The league has yet to comment on the incident.
Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET in San Antonio.
