Sherman’s Garden District Nursery Grows Its Own Rules

The Gilded Gardener on North Travis Street is one of those places that looks, from the parking lot, like a standard garden center. You expect aisles of plastic-potted annuals, a rack of Miracle-Gro, maybe a teenager half-heartedly watering something in the back. Walk in and that assumption dissolves fast.

What owner Linda Pruitt has built over the past decade is closer to a working garden studio than a retail nursery. The front half of the property is organized the way a thoughtful gardener thinks — not by product category, but by situation. There’s a shaded corner dedicated entirely to what actually thrives on a north-facing fence in Grayson County’s clay-heavy soil. There’s a raised-bed demonstration plot out back that cycles seasonally, planted with varieties you can walk out with that same day. Staff here know the difference between what looks good on a tag and what will survive a July in Texoma, and they’ll tell you plainly.

The plant selection leans toward natives and regionally adapted species — inland sea oats, Texas betony, fall aster, Mexican feathergrass — without being preachy about it. You can still find your standard knockout roses and begonias if that’s what you need. But the emphasis on plants that don’t require heroic effort to keep alive in North Texas gives the whole place a practical credibility most nurseries don’t bother with.

Inside the main building, Pruitt stocks a curated mix of quality tools, soil amendments, and a small but well-chosen line of ceramic pots sourced from a handful of Texas makers. None of it feels randomly assembled. Prices are fair — not bargain-bin, but you’re not paying a premium for packaging either. A one-gallon native perennial runs $8 to $12, which is competitive with the big-box alternatives down the highway, and the quality difference is usually obvious.

The workshop calendar is worth paying attention to. Pruitt and a rotating cast of local master gardeners run Saturday sessions on everything from composting with Texas heat in mind to building pollinator strips in small yards. Sessions typically run $20 to $35 and cap around a dozen people, so they stay genuinely useful rather than turning into a performance. Sign up online; they fill up two or three weeks out during spring.

Timing your visit matters. April through early May is the obvious peak — the full spring stock is in and the demonstration beds are at their most instructive. But the fall season, September into October, is worth the trip too. That’s when Pruitt stocks the cool-season crops and flowering kale, and when the staff has time to actually talk you through a plan rather than just point you toward a shelf.

The Gilded Gardener is on the north end of Travis, past the older residential blocks, in a building that used to house a feed store. There’s no dramatic signage. You find it because someone told you about it, which is exactly how most of the regulars discovered it too. If you’re serious about a yard in this part of Texas — or just trying to keep something alive through August — this is where you start.
