New Whale Mural Celebrates Ventura‑Loreto Sister City Partnership

Ventura residents strolling through the Harbor Village can now enjoy a fresh piece of public art that underscores the city’s long‑standing sister‑city relationship with Loreto, Baja California. The mural, painted by local artist M.B. Hanrahan, depicts a gray whale surrounded by other marine life, with signage pointing to Loreto and a QR code that lets viewers contribute to the project’s remaining costs.

Artist’s Vision and Cross‑Border Collaboration

Hanrahan, who recently completed a matching whale mural in Loreto as part of a cultural‑exchange program, signed the Ventura work after finishing the detailed composition between Coastal Cone and The Parlor. The artist said the piece was meant to celebrate shared environmental concerns and the historic missions that both communities call home.

Funding the Project

The mural’s total expense is estimated at $3,000. Former councilmember Carl Morehouse, who now chairs the San Buenaventura Sister City Association, hopes the QR‑code donation option will encourage locals and visitors to help cover the remaining balance. “We want this artwork to be a point of pride for both cities and a reminder of our joint stewardship of the Pacific,” Morehouse said.

Why the Whale?

Gray whales migrate along the California coast each winter, passing near both Ventura and Loreto. By featuring the majestic creature, the mural connects the two ports to a shared natural heritage and underscores the importance of protecting marine ecosystems.

Community Resources

The sister‑city website offers information on student‑exchange programs, cultural trips, and updates on whale‑migration tracking. Residents interested in learning more or participating in future exchanges can visit venturasistercity.org.

Local Impact

Public art projects like this one enhance the visual appeal of downtown Ventura, draw foot traffic to nearby businesses, and provide a tangible reminder of the city’s international friendships. The mural’s presence is expected to boost community pride and encourage further collaboration with Loreto on environmental and cultural initiatives.

As the mural gains attention, city officials hope it will inspire additional sister‑city projects that celebrate shared values, strengthen family ties across borders, and promote responsible stewardship of the region’s natural resources.
