Ohio State University has reached a significant settlement agreement, promising to pay approximately $100 million to resolve legal claims from hundreds of former student athletes who reported sexual abuse by Dr. Richard Strauss. This settlement, approved by the university’s Board of Trustees, is a major step in addressing the grievances of those affected by Strauss’ misconduct during his tenure from 1978 to 1998.
Settlement Details
The settlement involves all but one of the 280 survivors still engaged in litigation against the university. This agreement aims to conclude a prolonged legal battle that has been ongoing since 2018. The university had previously settled with 317 survivors for over $61 million, with many former athletes, including some who went on to play in the NFL, signing sealed agreements to keep their identities confidential.
University’s Response
Ohio State’s president, Ravi Bellamkonda, expressed gratitude to the survivors for their courage in coming forward and emphasized the importance of reaching a final resolution. He stated, “The survivors of the Strauss abuse are all Buckeyes, will always be a part of our family and our community, and I firmly believe that.”
An independent report had previously revealed that numerous Ohio State personnel were aware of complaints about Strauss as early as 1979 but failed to take meaningful action for years. The university and the plaintiffs have acknowledged the role of mediators in reaching this settlement and are working to finalize the details.
