ACCESS Early Childhood in Little Rock Fosters Community Through Morning Drop-Off

In Little Rock, Arkansas, ACCESS Early Childhood has transformed its morning drop-off line into a meaningful community tradition. Originally implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic to adhere to health protocols, the drive-through drop-off has become a staple of the school day. Assistant Director Suzanne Carter describes it as the ‘great chaos of drop off,’ a phrase she has embraced with affection.

A Tradition Born of Necessity

Before the pandemic, parents would park and walk their children into the building. However, COVID-19 restrictions necessitated a new approach, leading to the current system where staff members greet students directly from their vehicles. This adaptation has proven beneficial, allowing for a smooth and efficient start to the day. Staff members begin welcoming students at 7:15 a.m., although families often arrive earlier, eager to start their day.

The process is supported by a dedicated team of ‘unloaders’ who ensure each child receives a warm greeting, regardless of the weather. This consistency has fostered strong relationships between staff and families, with staff members recognizing vehicles and tailoring their greetings to each child’s needs.

Year-Round Support for Families

ACCESS Early Childhood serves children from six weeks to kindergarten age, providing comprehensive education for those with and without developmental delays. The school operates year-round, a schedule designed to prevent regression in skills for children who benefit from continuous learning. This approach supports both the children and their families, ensuring that learning and development are uninterrupted.

Carter emphasizes that the success of the morning drop-off lies in the enthusiasm and commitment of the staff. ‘It’s our people,’ she says, highlighting the energy and care that staff members bring to their roles each day. This dedication is evident not only in the classroom but also in the parking lot, where staff members engage with families and children, creating a welcoming and supportive environment.
