Phillies Pitcher Cristopher Sánchez Ends Historic Shutout Streak Against Padres

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cristopher Sánchez saw his impressive shutout streak come to an end at 50 2/3 innings during a game against the San Diego Padres. Sánchez allowed a two-out RBI single to Jackson Merrill in the seventh inning, marking the first run he has given up since April.

Historic Streak

Sánchez’s streak is now the third longest in Major League Baseball since the Live Ball Era began in 1920. He trails only the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Orel Hershiser, who holds the record with 59 consecutive scoreless innings in 1988, and Don Drysdale with 58 innings in 1968. During the game, Sánchez surpassed Carl Hubbell to become the career leader among left-handed pitchers.

Before the streak ended, Sánchez had been dominant, striking out San Diego’s Fernando Tatis Jr. and setting the Padres down in order in the first inning. He had not been in serious jeopardy of allowing a run since a game against the Giants on April 30, where he gave up two runs in the first inning but the Phillies still secured a 3-2 victory.

Career Highlights

Sánchez, a 29-year-old left-hander, has been a standout performer for the Phillies. In his last start against the Padres, he broke the Phillies’ franchise record for consecutive shutout innings, previously set at 41 by Grover Cleveland Alexander in 1911. Sánchez’s performance earned him the title of National League Pitcher of the Month for May, during which he went 4-0 with 45 strikeouts and only three walks over 39 innings.

His achievements have drawn praise from teammates and opponents alike. Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper commented on Sánchez’s performance, noting the significant number of strikeouts that have bolstered the team’s defense. Even Orel Hershiser, whose record Sánchez was approaching, expressed his support for Sánchez potentially breaking the record, emphasizing the life-changing nature of such accomplishments.

Sánchez’s journey to this point began when he signed with the Tampa Bay Rays as an international free agent in 2013. He was traded to the Phillies six years later in a relatively unnoticed transaction. Since making his major league debut in 2021, Sánchez has steadily improved, finishing as the runner-up for the NL Cy Young Award in 2025.
