NBA Eyes European League Launch by 2027, Spurs’ Wembanyama Boosts Interest

The NBA is making strides toward launching a new league in Europe by the 2027-28 season, according to Commissioner Adam Silver. This initiative, a collaboration with FIBA, aims to capitalize on the growing enthusiasm for basketball in Europe, particularly with the rise of San Antonio Spurs’ star Victor Wembanyama. Wembanyama, who has been a pivotal figure in the Spurs’ journey to the NBA Finals, has sparked significant interest in the sport across Europe, especially in his home country of France.

Wembanyama’s influence is evident as the Spurs prepare for two regular-season games in Europe next year, including a matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans in Paris and Manchester. These cities are among those expected to host teams in the upcoming European league. The NBA’s expansion plans have been long in the making, but Wembanyama’s ascent has undoubtedly accelerated interest and engagement in the region.

Domestic Expansion and Other NBA Developments

In addition to the European league plans, the NBA is also considering domestic expansion. Seattle and Las Vegas are potential candidates for new teams, with multiple groups expressing interest. However, Silver emphasized that no definitive timeline has been set for this expansion, although a decision is expected by the end of 2026.

Meanwhile, the NBA is conducting an investigation into a $28 million endorsement deal involving Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers, which may have breached salary cap regulations. Silver is keen on concluding the investigation soon, underscoring the importance of a thorough and accurate resolution.

Lastly, the league is contemplating ways to honor former Commissioner David Stern, who passed away in 2020. Silver acknowledged the challenge of creating an award that appropriately reflects Stern’s legacy and contributions to the NBA.
