The Man Behind Smartmouth’s Rival on 21st Street

What does a former Navy guy do after years of moving from port to port, tasting every regional beer culture the country has to offer? If you are Brian O’Connor, you come home to Norfolk and build a brewery from scratch — one that, a decade-plus later, has quietly become one of the anchors of the 21st Street industrial corridor in the Park Place neighborhood.

O’Connor Brewing Co. opened in 2010, and Brian has never been hard to find there. On a given weekday afternoon, he or someone from his core team is usually somewhere between the production floor and the taproom, troubleshooting something or talking through a grain bill. The space itself is large and deliberately unfussy — high ceilings, exposed ductwork, concrete floors worn smooth by foot traffic. It does not try to feel like a gastropub. It tries to feel like a brewery, and it succeeds.

The beer lineup is where O’Connor earns its reputation. The El Guapo IPA has been a mainstay for years, assertive but not punishing, with a clean bitter finish that rewards a second pint. Equally worth seeking out is the Big Ugly Stout — dark and roasty without overcorrecting into syrup territory. The seasonal and small-batch rotation turns over often enough that regulars tend to check the taproom’s social feed before visiting, because the double dry-hopped experimental runs sell out fast and rarely come back in exactly the same form.

The food situation is honest: O’Connor relies on rotating food trucks parked out front rather than running its own kitchen. On weekends especially, there is usually something good out there — a taco operation, a BBQ truck, occasionally wood-fired pizza. It is worth checking ahead if a full meal is part of the plan, but the beer carries the visit on its own.

The taproom pours run roughly six to nine dollars a pint, and the space is large enough that it rarely feels crowded except during special release events. There is an outdoor area with picnic tables that gets heavy use from spring through fall, and dogs are common and welcome. The crowd skews local — Park Place residents, people who work nearby, a contingent from the Ghent and Wards Corner neighborhoods who make the drive specifically for what they already know is on tap.

What separates O’Connor from the brewery tourism circuit is exactly that local density. There are visitors, but the regulars set the tone. On a Friday evening, conversations at the bar tend to last. Brian’s own background — the Navy service, the years of moving — shows up in the brewery’s ethos in ways that are hard to pin down precisely but easy to feel. This is not a place performing craft brewery culture. It is a place that has been doing this long enough to have stopped worrying about the performance entirely.

O’Connor Brewing is at 211 W. 24th Street, open Tuesday through Sunday. Parking is easy and free. If the El Guapo is on tap, start there.
