DR Congo Hopes to Proceed with Spain Soccer Match Despite Ebola Concerns

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s national soccer team is determined to proceed with its World Cup warm-up match against Chile in Spain, despite a recent decision by local authorities to cancel the game due to concerns over an Ebola outbreak in the African nation. The Congolese team, which has been preparing for the tournament in Belgium, is hopeful that a solution can be found to allow the match to take place as planned.

Local Authorities’ Decision

The mayor of La Linea de la Concepcion, Juan Franco, revoked the authorization for the match, citing the health situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the lack of documentation proving there is no risk. Despite the team’s compliance with health, sporting, and regulatory requirements, the decision was made as a precautionary measure.

Coach Sebastien Desabre expressed surprise at the decision but remained optimistic that an alternative venue in Spain could be found. He emphasized the team’s adherence to health protocols and ongoing communication with FIFA regarding the Ebola situation.

World Cup Preparations

The Congolese team is set to play a friendly match against Denmark in Liège, Belgium, before their scheduled game in Spain. This World Cup marks the team’s first appearance in 52 years, and they are set to be based in Houston, Texas. Their Group K campaign includes matches against Portugal, Colombia, and Uzbekistan in various U.S. cities.

The Congolese Football Federation (FECOFA) is actively engaging with the Spanish Football Federation and other relevant authorities to find a resolution that would allow the match to proceed, underscoring the importance of these preparatory games for the team’s World Cup ambitions.
