EngAGE Beverly Starts Twice‑Weekly Dementia Support Gatherings at Bethany Union Church

When Julie Singler’s father‑in‑law was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in June 2024, she found the local options lacking. Determined to create a better fit for her family and others, she launched EngAGE Beverly, a nonprofit dedicated to helping adults experiencing memory changes stay engaged and connected.

Community‑Based Gatherings

Based out of Bethany Union Church at 1750 W. 103rd St., EngAGE Beverly held its inaugural twice‑weekly gatherings last week. Singler explained that the intentional schedule “builds community and familiarity together,” providing participants with social interaction, enjoyable activities, and mental stimulation that can help keep the brain healthier longer.

Each meeting centers on a theme. In the first session, members discussed baseball while the Chicago White Sox were in the playoffs, sang along to Harry Caray’s rendition of “Take Me Out To the Ball Game,” and even swung a baseball off a tee. For those less interested in sports, the group explored the history of the Great Chicago Fire, showing the program’s flexibility to meet varied interests.

Respecting Dignity and Cognitive Needs

Singler, a former teacher and Chicago Public Schools principal, emphasized the importance of preserving the dignity of participants. “My father‑in‑law has probably read a thousand books,” she said. “We wanted a place that honors his intellect while offering conversation points that match his cognitive level.”

EngAGE Beverly’s staff includes Mary Ryan, a retired nurse who volunteers as an adult‑engagement specialist, and Allie Vaughn, the founding director of strategic partnerships. Both bring personal caregiving experience—Vaughn cared for her mother, who lived with frontotemporal dementia and probable Alzheimer’s—underscoring the program’s empathy‑driven approach.

Volunteer Support and Family Involvement

Family members, neighbors, and church volunteers have quickly rallied around the initiative. Singler’s husband, Patrick, helped facilitate the first meetings, while her children crafted name tags and set up activities. The Rev. Lawrence Cameron of Bethany Union Church provided the nonprofit with a home base, reinforcing the partnership between faith and community service.

Participants and their caregivers have already reported tangible benefits. Peter Kelly, 61, who lives with dementia, now spends his evenings engaged with the group, giving his wife Barbara a much‑needed break from constant caregiving. “It gives me a break, but it also gives him a break,” she said.

Respite for Caregivers

Beyond the direct benefits to those with memory loss, EngAGE Beverly offers caregivers essential respite. One caregiver was able to attend a chiropractor appointment and reconnect with a friend, while Singler’s mother‑in‑law used the gathering time to catch up on her own medical appointments. “Caregivers are able to step out and reclaim pieces of their identity,” Singler noted.

Looking Ahead

Singler hopes to expand the program’s schedule and reach more families who feel isolated by a lack of local resources. “If a neighbor or a family member is suffering or feeling alone, they don’t have to,” she said. “We may not be experts in dementia, but we are surrounding ourselves with people who are, and we will connect you with the right resources.”

EngAGE Beverly exemplifies how faith‑based venues, dedicated volunteers, and compassionate leadership can fill a critical gap in elder‑care support, strengthening the fabric of the Beverly community.
