Bayou Land Conservancy appoints Dr. Anna Weiss as new executive director

Bayou Land Conservancy (BLC) announced that Dr. Anna Weiss became its executive director on Aug. 24, succeeding longtime director Jill Boullion, who retired earlier this year. Weiss brings a background in community development from Galveston’s Fishing Galveston collective, where she worked on parks, green space and resilience projects.

Why Weiss chose BLC

Weiss said she wanted to be “boots on the ground” for land‑preservation work. Seeing BLC physically set aside land for flood control, clean water and wildlife appealed to her hands‑on approach.

Early priorities

Weiss highlighted two immediate focus areas. First, she wants to connect parcels along the Spring Creek Nature Trail into a longer, continuous system that offers recreation, social space and regional connectivity. Second, she warned about a proposed Scarborough development that would place roughly 7,000 homes on 5,500 acres of floodplain and floodway, increasing risk for residents downstream.

She explained that forested, natural areas act like a sponge, soaking up water and slowing runoff. Replacing those areas with concrete and housing creates a funnel that directs floodwater toward homes and downstream communities.

Community involvement

Weiss urged residents to get involved through several direct avenues. Volunteers can join BLC’s work days to protect native plants, remove invasive species, and help build or maintain trails. The organization also runs an invasives‑removal team and a trail crew for those who enjoy hands‑on projects.

Beyond field work, Weiss emphasized the policy side of land preservation. She noted that effective flood‑resilience measures depend on sound public policy and that community members have a voice with elected officials. Residents can contact their representatives about development encroaching on natural spaces and advocate for green infrastructure over traditional gray infrastructure.

Equitable access and outreach

Weiss stressed that BLC’s mission includes serving all people, not just landowners who can set aside property for tax benefits. The nonprofit’s equitable community‑engagement committee works to involve residents of diverse backgrounds, ensuring that conservation benefits reach the broader community.

“Conservation and wildlife are something everyone should have a right to enjoy,” Weiss said.

Personal motivation

Weiss traced her nonprofit path to a personal experience with Hurricane Sandy, which hit her hometown while she was studying anthropology. The storm convinced her that climate change is real and local, prompting a shift to geology, a Ph.D., and eventually nonprofit work focused on tangible community impact.

She added that while academic work is valuable, she prefers “being in the dirt” and seeing the direct results of conservation efforts.

Looking ahead

BLC will celebrate its 30th anniversary at a gala on Nov. 14 at Highland Pines Golf Club. The event will showcase the organization’s achievements and future plans under Weiss’s leadership.

Residents who want to support BLC can sign up for volunteer days, join the trail crew, or participate in the invasives‑removal team. They are also encouraged to stay informed about local development proposals and to voice their concerns to elected officials, reinforcing the link between community action and effective environmental policy.
