Manitowoc trial presents heavy log punishment evidence in Ethan Hauschultz case

Manitowoc, WI – On Wednesday morning, the trial of Timothy Hauschultz entered its third day as the prosecution continued to present evidence of the harsh punishment imposed on 7‑year‑old Ethan Hauschultz and his twin brother.

Detective Michael Herrman testifies

Detective Michael Herrman of the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office, who managed the evidence at the Hauschultz residence, returned to the stand to explain how the scene was documented. He described the logs that the boys were ordered to carry as part of the punishment.

Heavy logs shown to jurors

Jurors were shown the actual logs used that day. Ethan’s log weighed more than 44 pounds, while the log assigned to his twin brother weighed 35.6 pounds. The size and weight of the logs were highlighted to illustrate the severity of the task forced upon the children.

Clothing and personal items displayed

The prosecution also presented the clothing Ethan was wearing when he was found in the Hauschultz backyard. Parents Tim and Tina Hauschultz testified that they removed the boy’s garments after bringing him inside. The items displayed to the jury included a pair of jeans with a ripped knee, a pair of children’s brief underwear, a long‑sleeve t‑shirt, a hooded sweatshirt, and two pairs of socks. Two knit stocking caps that had been located outside the home were also shown.

Evidence of injuries on twin brother

Photographs of Ethan’s twin brother were entered into evidence. The pictures revealed bruises and scratches on the boy’s face, legs, and abdomen, suggesting additional physical harm beyond the forced labor.

Prosecution’s narrative

Prosecutors argue that the logs and the physical evidence demonstrate a pattern of extreme discipline that resulted in Ethan’s tragic death. They contend that the weight of the logs, combined with the harsh environment, contributed directly to the fatal outcome.

Defense response

The defense has not yet presented its full rebuttal, but has indicated it will question the causality between the logs and the child’s death, and will seek to contextualize the family’s disciplinary practices.

The trial is expected to continue through the week, with additional witnesses slated to testify about the family’s routine, the condition of the home, and medical findings.
