CCRI earns NECHE distinction for top‑rated non‑credit workforce program

Warwick, RI – The New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) has formally recognized the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) for its exemplary non‑credit workforce program. NECHE, an independent accreditor approved by the U.S. Department of Education, launched a special recognition program in 2025 to evaluate non‑credit training that directly serves industry needs.

Why the award matters

Unlike traditional academic accreditation, NECHE’s new designation focuses on learner‑centered experiences that are tightly aligned with employer demands. CCRI is one of only 21 institutions nationwide to receive this honor, highlighting its role as a model for other community colleges seeking to strengthen workforce pipelines.

College leadership’s response

“For decades, CCRI has been Rhode Island’s premier workforce training partner, helping individuals build better futures while providing employers with the skilled talent they need to succeed,” said CCRI President Rosemary A. Costigan. “This recognition affirms what we have long known: CCRI is not simply delivering workforce training. We are setting a standard for excellence that other institutions can learn from.”

Recent program expansions

CCRI’s momentum continues with several high‑impact initiatives. The college was recently named to the Lowe’s Foundation Building Futures Skilled Trades Coalition, a national effort to expand apprenticeship opportunities. Locally, CCRI launched a new welding program in partnership with Senesco Marine and Polaris MEP, and an HVAC/R training track funded by the Office of Energy Resources. Additionally, a $4.6 million federal grant will support engineering workforce development in collaboration with the University of Rhode Island.

Future plans for a regional hub

To further cement its economic impact, CCRI is moving forward with the proposed Workforce Innovation Center on its Warwick campus. The center, pending voter approval as part of Question 1 on this year’s ballot, would become a regional hub for training in high‑demand fields such as construction, advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity and other skilled trades. The facility aims to prepare more residents for well‑paying jobs and to meet the talent needs of local employers.

Community benefits

By delivering high‑quality, employer‑driven training, CCRI helps residents achieve upward mobility while supplying Rhode Island businesses with a reliable pipeline of skilled workers. The NECHE recognition underscores the college’s commitment to both individual success and regional economic growth, reinforcing Warwick’s position as a hub for workforce development.
